XLR TO MINIJACK: Shure A96F Transformer

Post by S8 Booster »

There seem to be a certain interest in using low impedance XLR microphones on medium impedance input recording devices as MDs etc.

Here is one plug and play unit from Shure that allows just that.

anyone know what you lose in regards to sound quality and warmth using this adapter, or is it really the magic bullet? For 60 bucks, i would hope it is.

IS this the best option for achieving XLR to minijack?

I would go straight out and buy one of these for use with my laptop, except I wouldn't be able to use headphones with it for monitoring, as there's only one in/out jack socket on my laptop.

I had my minidisc recorder stolen from my car about a year ago, and I sorely miss it. I have a crystal sync camera, and no recording devise! I think that I will go for one of these, which is just a cool thing for all sound recording - it runs on batteries, records to a card which can be "dropped off" to my laptop in seconds, has XLR inputs, and can be used for songwriting too - ait is so cheap I can hardly believe it - perhaps even cheaper than the latest Sony MD and this XLR adapter thing:

It can also be used as an interface, connected to the laptop by USB permanently for continuous recording. The 128MB card it comes with only has 50 minute capacity (mono) at 44.1Khz 16 bit recording. This is it's main limitation, but a second card, or a £20 USB card reader means you just have to dump the data off every 50 minutes of recording time.

For those that haven't had their minidisc recorders stolen, however, I'd say the above connector cable is a damned cool thing to buy, or even make!

The Shure Company is an old manufacturer reknown for high quality products. This unit goes a long way to retain the original quality of balanced (XLR / Cannon) systems.

I think there are cheaper resistor network based solutions qvqilqble but this one is of professional quality. If you ned one this is probably the best non electronic device available.
