Wild ,crystal or PC jack?

Post by jaxshooter »

The Film Group will crystal almost any super 8 camera but it costs $$$.How many out here just shoot wild and worry about syncing in the post? How are your results? My new Elmo 1012 is really quiet and I'm not ready to shell out the bucks necessary to crystal it.How many of you just shoot wild and sync it later in the post?

Five.. It takes a while for my 814 to drift, and very minimal.. real easy to stretch audio tracks in tiny increments.
100D and Vision 3 please

my 814e starts drifting right away, but always by the exact same (small) amount so i just batch process my audio files the same way. almost like crystal.

well, so do i more or less since the camera is so noisy, but it gets sooo much easier if you have a guide track.

I've posted this clip of mine several times before. But here you can see the results of shooting with the Super8 camera, and recording audio with my Sony camcorder, then syncing together in post. I had to do some speed adjustment on the footage every so often since my Super8 cam is not crystal'd. Not too difficult and the results are pretty good. Sine this was only test footage, if you listen closely you can hear the camera running in the background.

I use crystal when I am shooting anything that needs synching. I have seen S8 camera drift right out of the gate. People that say that their cameras will hold synch for 15+ seconds are full of it. They drift within frames.

Good Luck

mine holds sync for entire carts, easily, if by holding sync we count drifting by a predictable amount. many electronically controlled cameras do.

I've never really tired to shoot a "sound" short on Super 8. I was thinking of trying it one day though. But I'm going to try it first with a 16mm wind up camera in Dec. Not sure how long it would hold sync for a scene, say a 15 sec shot. Anyone have any experience with shooting 16mm "sound?" I think I'll foley almost all of it, but would like something to link up to hear the dailes.

I "forgot" to record a guide track on my last project. It didn't really help or hurt me in terms of effort or time spent adding in sound - especially since I went for a fairly stylized soundscape that probably was different than the actual environmental sounds.
