creating Mpegs

I would like to share some short clips of my movies, but my Mpegs for 30 secs run around 9 megs. I would like to cut this in half but no matter what I try I keep creating files 9 megs or greater. I am using Ulead Media Pro 6 and Windows Media 8. If some one could give me some tips I would appreciate it.

that sounds about right if you're compressing the full frame. mpeg is optimized for 150kb/s (cd speed) for quarter size video. if you are using 320x240 or similar and still get 9 megs per half minute you're doing something wrong. sorry, but i'm a mac guy so i can't help you with that...

I just encoded a sample 47 second clip to mpeg and the resulting file was about 7.5 MB.

What type of mpeg file are you creating? There are mpeg-1 and mpeg-2 files. Typically if you are creating a file to play over the internet, you would create an mpeg-1.

You might try using a third-party mpeg encoder, such as the one found at http://www.tmpgenc.net, to convert the avi file to mpeg1. This program contains a template called "VCD" that allows you to easily convert to mpeg1 with the right resolution and settings. If you are into that kind of thing, there is even a formula on http://www.tmpgenc.net that tells how to calculate the size in megs that your mpeg file should be given the duration of your avi file.

I don't know if TMPGEnc would produce smaller files for you, but you might give it a try (especially since it is free).

this is a very easy and direct way to make mpeg-1 files from avi ones. Free.

Thanks for the help, both encoders did the trick. I was able to reduce the file size to 5.7 megs from over 9megs
