I've just received a camera from this guy that was advertised as in near mint condition, but which did not mention the scratch on the lens. I wouldn't mind but I just spent a small fortune on the camera.

I have sent a mail to him quite politely notifying him of this and he just mailed back stating "The lens was scratch free and 100% clean" I've sent another reply stating that I hate to advise to contrary, but the scratch is there and has been so for some time. I've yet to receive a reply....

Anyone else dealt with this guy?

Any advice on what I should do?

I don't really want to file a claim with PayPal, but might this be my only option?

Thanks for any advice!

Direct Action.

Threaten to spoil his name continuously on every single message board, forum on the internet until you get a refund or a repair.

Lucky that you purchased via PayPal though. My dodgy dealer didn't accept it, now I just have to pray that the camera is sent, and that when it arrives it functions properly.

Invite them to this thread and ask them to explain how the scratch got there in shipping, if it wasn´t there when they sent it. And explain that this is the biggest super8 board on the internet, they will loose a lot of possible clients if they act like assholes here.

If it got there during shipping it must have been really crappy packaged (very unlikely).

Did it have a lens cap? If it did they sure as hell can´t blame it on the shipping.

Thanks for your opinion and advice, I hope you get your camera ok.

It so sad that he won't even acknowledge that there is a problem. On his website http://www.super8camera-shop.com he gives grading advice and in the 'near mint' he describes this to be 97-99% of the original condition. Even in the 2 tier lower category of Exc++ He states moderate wear but that the lens is clear.

In my case the camera was described as near mint. The camera was dirty when it arrived, has various surface marks and no less than 5 dings/dents. These don't matter as they won't affect the film... but a scratch on the lens????

He has a 'Bargain Camera' section on his website, where he sells camera with scratched lenses for 50 Euros.... I paid over 300 for mine...

...I really don't want to threaten to bad mouth him... but I am angry...

It was well packaged, had a lens cap plus a skylight filter!

Maybe they missed it because of the skylight filter?
It is impossible to be shipping damage. If you can take a picture of it with your digital camera and send it to them maybe they will give some of the price in refund?

They don´t need to feel too pushed, offer the explanation that they perhaps missed it because of the skylight filter. Then they don´t need to feel like liars. ;)

one advice possibly useful under such circumstances.

when i buy goods advertised on the net - ebay or other- i allways print out a .pdf copy (mac - dont know if PCs do this directly from the browsers but paper copies will do too) of the original web ad in case there becomes any "uncertainties" later.

I bought a camera and some other bits and pieces from this guy and had no problems - I was thinking of buying another from him, but I'll think a bit harder now - my suggestion also is to refer him to this thread and point out that he may be losing at least one customer (ie me!) already. He offers a 30 day warranty after all, so he should honour it...

Good luck and keep us posted.

I would get a refund, this is not acceptable at all. If it is described as "mint" there should be a no quibble 7 days guarantee at least. And with all those dings and dents it's hardly "mint".

Still feel angry myself even after a few years on some camera I bought from a dealer ( Marriots ) in the UK. It was described as "mint" but when the camera arrived the zoom lever on the lens is not the original one and instead some crappy machined part replacement. I emailed them but of course never heard from them since.

It's bit dodgy getting cameras and stuff off the internet, very " hit" and "miss"
indeed.

I've bought from him several times and have never had any problems. I would suggest this is an honest mistake rather than an attempt to screw you out of good money.

I've never bought a camera from him, but I have bought numerous other items. I think I have ordered from super8 camera shop six times, always the goods arrive quickly well packed and in good condition. Generally his prices are realistic compared to others.

Can you perhaps send him a photo of the lens damage? Is it bad enough to affect the performance?

Hi Angus, well I don't think it will impair the performance of the lens - I'm going to shoot some test footage to see. It is only about 1.2cm long and appears towards the edge of the lens ( the scratch is curved, and a clean curve at that perhaps someone was careless when attaching a filter? )

It's just when you spend nearly £250 on a camera that is advertised as near mint you don't expect the lens to be dirty and have a scratch.

I agree that he probably was unaware of the scratch, however he has not offered me a discount or refund or any kind of 'aftercare' - he simply denys it's existance.

I'll try and photograph it, but I don't have a digital camera.... grrrr...

Thanks for your support, I'm sorry to hear about your problem. I agree it's very hit and miss.

On his webiste he has a 15 day retun/refund* option - but you get a 'store credit' minus the value of shipping.

He's not even offered me this, and do I want a store credit and have to forefit the shipping fees beacuse the camera was incorrectly described?

I'm just so unhappy.....

Is there anyway you could stop the payment with your credit card company? Did you pay by credit card?

Be persistent, it's not your fault. Insist a full "refund" rather then a credit.
Which model of camera did you get by the way?

It was a Canon 814xl-s

I paid straight from my bank account via PayPal.

I believe I can request a refund, but I need to go through various stages of diplomacy before I can get this.

What really nags me is the fact I turned down the offer to buy a Canon 814xl-s from a really straight up and nice guy from this forum. I decided not to as he is in Australia, and I thought it might be bad for the camera to ship it half way across the globe..... though he offered me loads of extras e.g.flight case , tele converter filters etc... wish I could turn back time now...

... I'm still waiting for a reply from the Super8 Camera-shop.... I was clear and firm, but very polite in my email.

Maybe I should just wait and see what the footage is like...
