What about a Scoopic? You could look at a real DS8 version and see what it would take to make a DS8 version from a 16mm version...freedom4kids wrote:Reflex: I understand. Lets not flog a dead horse.
But my question remains. What other lightweight 2nd hand reflex/non reflex 16mm cameras exist that can be machined for DS8? I am not referring to the standard Bolex R8 - DS8 conversions.
There is a potential method to my proposed machining madness.

Rather than hope and wait for what might not ever be available, maybe think of having a Bolex DS-8mm (either convert one or buy one already done) and have the reflex viewfinder brightened, buy a Tobin crystal sync motor, make a barney and shoot away. You would not spend a fraction of what a new Ikonoscop DS8 would. Yeah, I'd love to have one if they ever made them, but realistically I don't know when I might be able to afford one... Oh yeah, also widen the gate for 16:9 HD and you would have one kick ass S-8mm camera system. There are those who want to rule out DS-8mm, but it makes so much sense for those wanting the best S8 has to offer. Right now you can shoot E100D, Velvia, and UN54 which are three of the best stocks available. If we don't use them, they will not be available in the future and that can be said for any format. The horse may be dead now, but I did write & call a few times with 2000 in hand, to "pre-order" 2 cams.

I was told years ago by an old cameraman that Bell and Howell had made a prototype Filmo DS8mm but never brought it out to market. According to this guy it was the typical Filmo but used DS8mm film and was pretty sweet to shoot with but still lacked a reflex finder. He claimed to have owned one but had sold it so I didn't get to see any proof. Have no idea if he was telling the truth...I've sometimes wondered if my Filmo could be modified for DS8 shooting...
