"i'm so sick and tired of all the resolution freaks on this board. why won't you just *look* at the image for once?"

I'm not a resolution freak FYI! I happen to have used both formats in a practical broadcast environment, and I have looked very closely at them as part of my living day in day out, and I can tell you DigiBeta is far superior to IMX, subjectively or not - you are seeing things if you claim otherwise. The point of the data is to show that there is a so much difference in quality of the two formats that it necessarily negates any subjective claim to contrary.

Furthermore it may be of interest to know that HD cameras like the Sony CineAlta use the same size 2/3" chips as SD DigiBeta/IMX cameras but have significantly more pixels per chip ( a million plus as opposed to 470,000). They also have far higher qulaity optics designed to accomodate the higher resolution.

Regards.

but you did use the color subsampling rate and compression ratio to argue imx's inferiority. why didn't you say "i've used both and i think digibeta offers a better look" instead if that's what you meant? perhaps you thought i was one of the resolution freaks? :-) anyway, what i'm saying is that imx is the most common format for digital film production in sweden right now and that i think it produces great images. never did i imply any comparison with digibeta, which i also think is a great format.

Please remind me about this ad - I think I remember watching it before I got into film and knew nothing about flim technology. I remember thinking - that looks so good!

I never got to see Natural Born Killers at the cinema - what did the S8 look like blown up? - can anyone remember?

I have seen it on DVD and the S8 mixed with the super sharp 35 looks so good and helps the story so much. If you listen to the Oliver Stone commentary he says that they did intend to use 16mm colour but it looked too good, "like 35 colour" so they went with the ektachrome super8. I think it is an excellent effect, especially the wedding scene.

Although it's been a few years, I remember it looked very good.

Yes, it was grainy, but still sharp. And it served the story well. That film generally had some vivid colours.
