Carl's reply, to my way of thinking, is in the spirit of this group, which I've always interpreted as "super 8 is cool, see what you can do with it".

I don't see the point of getting on a super 8 forum to going on and on about how great digital is and how everyone should remember not to try anything new with super 8.

I didn't say not to try try new things with Super8.

I didn't say digital is better.

What I am saying is that trying to make Super8 in to something it isn't is a waste of time and energy. Use Super8 for what it is. Use it's faults to your advantage and use it for its look. Not try to shoehorn it in to a place it doesn't belong.

Fair enough. But can't this be said without insulting anyone? Ah! You just did. ;)

Roger

How did I 'insult'?

I never said that someone is an asshole or try to insinuate that someone is a hack or fool...

All I have said in so many words is that I find it interesting that people are still jawboning about what Super8 isn't rather than trying to use it for what it is.

And.

The Super8 to HD thread is at 17 pages. Growing and growing and growing.

How about this?

This Saturday we all go shoot a damn roll of Super8 instead of talking about Super8.

The Super8 HD thread is growing for a number of reasons. One is that some good arguments are taking place there.

But what's wrong with shooting some Super8 AND talking about Super8? Or some of us shooting Super8 and others talking about it? Why should they be opposed to each other?

I mean, here on the forum, one doesn't have any choice but to talk. Or show some work, which is a form of talking.

What is a forum anyway if not a place to talk, or otherwise argue something. The Ancient Greeks used forums as a way arguing issues with each other that would operate at the level of talking rather than beating each other over the head with clubs. The point was to reach some sort of understanding with each other in that domain, in the domain of words, rather then on the battlefield with who was more of an aggressive "alpha male" (or female) than another. A forum is a space to elaborate ideas.

But I'm all for action as well. It is no less a form of thought.

Have you ever seen a group of apes in a zoo having a group argument. It's an amazing sight. They bellow at each other and stomp around, and beat their chests. They do a show of signifying violence. They act it out. Their body language is a form of talking. They are playing a game of negotiation with each other. It's a profound thing to see. What eventually emerges is that all of their grumpiness is eventually exorcised. They kinda settle down a bit wiser with each other. But more importantly with less bloodshed.

Again, I'm sure that all your early stuff is spectacular and beyond reproach. If you could post some links to it we'd all love to see it. ;)

Correct - it's the other stuff that makes me an asshole.

"Nickleback doesn't suck!" - Chad Kroeger, singer for Nickleback.

But he doesn't consider it "insulting", Roger. Nigel is above reproach. He is merely trying to give "constructive" criticism. It should be deemed as such.

If anything YOU should be apologizing! ;]

Mitch

Just because I think one film you made isn't that good doesn't mean I think you're an ass.

I really don't see why I can't say that a film isn't worth my time and have the filmmaker take it personally. By the time I see your film shouldn't you be on to something new? Why is one object of your creation so integral to your being that someone not liking it cuts you down?

Roger

I'm sure some of my early films would draw the ire of many. They are fodder for Internet trolls. However, I know full well that what I produce is the outcome of the producer(me). But, does not define or make the producer(me).

That's why I like how Scotness plows ahead. He moves on despite what anyone let alone I say. If Mitch takes things personally then that's his problem. Voicing an opinion is not insulting especially when the opinion is directed toward an object and not a person.

I really don't see why I can't post absurd drivel to this thread and not have you take it personally - start taking it personally! By the time I finish lunch shouldn't you be on to your second bottle? Why is your objection to my creation so integral to your being that one person not really caring cuts you down?
