Re: My new feature film
I notice there was a website for the film but that it doesn't exist anymore. Will there be, or is there a new website (and/or blog, etc.) for the film?

Re: My new feature film
Hey guys - a little late update - as I speak the final render is happening of the video -- the audio is being mixed in a studio in Ireland though - but if this video render checks out that's my part of it done.
The website for the film is woefully out of date so I'll look at bringing that up to date sometime soon.
I'm off to Cannes in April for MIPTV mainly for doco projects but I will be taking this in my port with me! If we have no luck with distributors (who I approached earlier but am yet to follow up with) then it's Amazon for DVD sales and VOD

Re: My new feature film
No problem - I can understand that. I took a break from the web for about six months for similar reasons. The web is great but it can also be a kind of very seductive distraction from other activities such as making films! Good luck with it all and be sure to report on results.Scotness wrote:Hi Carl - in answer to your earlier post too the website was down, but then we got it back up but I stopped posting for a while to concentrate on the filmmaking - but I'll be updating it over the next few weeks

Re: My new feature film
Hi guys I've recently held a competition on Freelancer.com to design a cover for our movie "It's Brisbane Tonight Wow" - I got about 40 entries -- there's two that I really like and I'm quite leaning towards one -- but anyway they allow you to have a poll to help you decide - so you can pick 8 entries and let your friends rate and comment on them
So if you'd like to have a look and rate the designs - please go here
http://www.freelancer.com/contest/poll-NTU4MDox
- I won't necessarily pick the one with the most votes - I'm more after guidance and comments/opinions
Thanks
Scot

Re: My new feature film
I'd go with the top left without a doubt. It's the easiest to read at first glance, and the simplest in design. The others include more info but ultimately they all look (to me) like they're trying too hard, kinda noisy, and to me they give the project a DIY look in the pejorative sense.

Re: My new feature film
Honestly, none of them. The first one with the singer could imply that the guy singing is someone named "Brisbane". YOU may know that isn't the case but not the potential first time viewer. You need something that is less photographic and more iconographic, like an empty stage with just a microphone in the spotlight and dustpan and broom leaning against a chair or something like that. All the entries, to me, look like just one grouping of pictures after another. Nothing in the designs make me want to watch the movie or be the least bit curious. They appear like the design is meant to appease the actors involved by being included on the cover rather than serve the needs of the potential audience. Including their pictures on the back would be appropriate but having them on the front is pointless and defeats the purpose of the graphics.
My two cents....

Re: My new feature film
Hi guys thanks for your input (4 cents?!!) -- I agree Roger the country and western one gives the wrong impression (for a variety of reasons) -- iconography might be hard to tie down - the film isn't about stand up comedy - but more a pisstake on community tv -- I do like having photos of cast on their though.
One interesting thought I had - is the designers haven't seen the film so it's a bit hard for them to know what to represent - and neither have most of the people looking at the covers -- so how do they judge it? But that's the good thing about it - we want a cover that appeals to people who haven't seen the film and know probably nothing about it.
Anyway it's got to be one of those 8 I'll make a choice tomorrow
Thanks again
Scot

Can't the artists see the film they are making a cover for? I don't understand.

Re: My new feature film
No what happened is I set up a competition on freelancer.com - I made it a guaranteed competition which meant I had to pick one of the entries -- the prize is about 190 US dollars -- and plus I'm going to MIPTV in Cannes next week -- mainly for some other projects - but I am taking this with me and I need it all finished and printed by early next week. I'm meeting with one US indie distributor and there's an Australian one as well I'm sending this too before I go.
For the competition I gave them a variety of images to choose from - probably about 15, with a few notes - I got 42 entries - but some are variations on a theme by the same designer so not too different to his other ones.

Re: My new feature film
Technically speaking I could still use a different design after all this is over - but there's two designs there I quite like and am happy to use -- and most of the feedback I'm getting from people is pointing towards one of those two as well

Re: My new feature film
Hi everyone we've now got the trailer done - I look forward to any feedback:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4xwa2-9z-RU
- I'm recording a commentary track along with the two leads this week
One US distributor is already looking at it (Osiris --> anyone have any experience with them?) - and sending it off to an Australian one on Monday
So finally getting completed!
By the way you can see what poster/DVD design I picked on this page
http://www.mango-a-gogo.com/films_ibtw.htm
- thanks for the input on that too

Re: My new feature film
Not that too many people here will be able to attend but we're having our premiere at the Regal Twin Cinema in Brisbane on Monday the 25th of June

Tricky thing now is we shot it in HD on Canon 7D - we finished it in SD - now I've got to go back and reconform the HD originals to our SD edit so we can do the screening in HD -- but I should have enough time for that given it's at the end of June

I love the fact that you go out and shoot these no-budget movies. You seem to always have something in the works.
But, it seems like you end up making a lot more work for yourself.
Making a contest for a poster/cover without the artist watching the film and choosing the images for them. Couldn't you have asked to see some prior work? Made a choice of who has a portfolio you like offer them money and give them the film to watch? And, provide them with materials when they may need it?
Shot in HD then finished in SD to have to go back? Why? Once you have an HD master I would think it would be pretty easy to lay off an SD copy. Whereas no so much the other way around.
Either way break-a-leg.
Good Luck
