I personally am proud of my good old fassion equipment. I'm happy to talk to people about why I'm using it too. There's no reason to be ashamed of your passions to the publiv unless of course it involves an illicit and or illegal activity.
I may sound stupid, but I hide it well.

I sometimes feel a bit self-concious carrying somewhat gun-shaped cameras around tourist spots here in london. :D

As soon as I can get some time, I will shoot some 64T with my Canon 814 XL-S in my hometown, Ghent. (We have some realy nice old buildings in Ghent).

In the centre of Ghent, you will find always tourists... many tourists... Japanese, Spanish, US, UK, German.. everything.

I am looking forwards .....
Do I need something to protect myself? :P

I've just remembered that when I filmed one of my shots for the "pass the cart" project last year, it involved setting up the camera on a tripod looking at a roundabout (reputed to be Britain's first).

Now this is not a particularly busy road, and it was the middle of a Sunday afternoon...but get out any "non-ordinary" looking camera on a tripod and people will flock to you.

Should have taken 30 seconds to get a clear shot of one specific car going round that roundabout...took more like 5 minutes in the end! Even the police had to come along and wave.

That's true. When I had a Sankyo EM40XL which looks like an UZI from a distance, I used to fold the pistol grip up when filming in London, to be on the safe side. Oddly enough, when in London, with any camera, the only people who've asked me about the camera are those who have been looking for one (or film for one) themselves, and I point them in the direction of a number of shops in London where kit can be got!

Elsewhere I get "wow! that's oldschool mate!" and "can you still get film for them?" etc...

I never feel at all self-conscious filming in London...perhaps because I've lived near London almost all my life.

I tend to feel more shy of whipping out the camera in public in places I am unfamiliar with.

But, to be honest, I've never had anyone think any of my cameras might be a weapon. I've even used super 8 cameras with pistol grips on airliners, including this year.

I do not use my nizo integral because it is also look like a weapon.

I think the more sophisticated your camera, people more respect you. On the other hand I do not like any attention focus on me, it is very disturbing, so It's not interesting they laugh or just want to contact a pro director (they think) it makes me nervous until the moment when I'm absorbed so much that can not interested in any circumstances. My wife and I were filming some 2nd unit shots for "Westsider" -- the very last day of shooting -- and were walking around the courtyard apts in Venice Beach...some grungy-artsy looking dudes were hanging out and one guy looked at the camera my wife was carrying and said, "that's a Canon 814 auto zoom! Yours is in much better shape than mine" then he proceeded to tell his astonished friend how you can buy negative super-8 film at "some place in the Valley..."

Another day we were filming on campus here at UCLA on a Saturday afternoon. A few sleepy students were around but no cops or authority-types. Some annoying guy trolling around with a small mini-DV cam asked us why we were having our lead actor walk through the fountain pool and arrogantly stick his hands up in the air...I said, "he just graduated last week and we thought we'd re-create this on film for his mom back east..." The guy looked at me like I was a nut and walked away...
