Some S8 100D Frame Grabs

I hope I understand this correctly but if you say used a simple, cheap NLE program, wouldnt you be using the codec from the capture device like a Canopus ADVC 100, Canon or Panasonic MiniDv camera etc rather than the standard Microsoft codec? If not, is there any way that you can continue using the codec from the capture device throughout the entire editing session with a cheap NLE program?

Not if you are exporting a new clip. What if you have footage from a Canopus ADVC 100, a Canon and a Panosonic all mixed together on the same timeline? How would you make the computer use the original codecs for each clip? You can't. Think of it like this: Let's say that you are using an optical printer to copy some film and introduce effects or speed changes. If you shot on Kodachrome originally, that has no bearing on the film you are going to copy that Kodachrome onto. Thus, the quality of the film you are using to copy with has a bearing on the quality of the final image.Patrick wrote:I hope I understand this correctly but if you say used a simple, cheap NLE program, wouldnt you be using the codec from the capture device like a Canopus ADVC 100, Canon or Panasonic MiniDv camera etc rather than the standard Microsoft codec?
When you export from your timeline, you are usually forced to use the codec that is native to that timeline if you are making changes to the image, such as color correction, speed changes, effects, etc that require recompression. I know that Matrox, for example, will not let you change the codec to something else. I don't know if cheaper NLEs like Ulead use the MicroSoft codec or if they use their own codec. But, as far as CineCap is concerned, you can use whatever codec you load onto your computer.Patrick wrote: If not, is there any way that you can continue using the codec from the capture device throughout the entire editing session with a cheap NLE program?

I had the some sharpness issues on Wittner carts here and therte but not always. The DS8 has been coming out just fine, but obviosly there is better registration.Interesting to hear about peoples impression that 100D is a tad soft, I have also found this on my 15 carts of Wittner I have shot over the last year, lovely grain and colours but I'm always sent into a panic that my eyepiece has been miss set or my lenses are out some how, then I transfer some 64t and it's sharp as a tack?
100D and Vision 3 please
Thanks Roger for clearing that up. That is coincidental that you mention Ulead. I was actually planning on installing an older version of Ulead Movie Studio on this new pc I got. A quick search on Google revealed that Ulead does install some kind of DV codec but whether that is superior to the Microsoft codec remains to be seen.
