Here I go making things complicated.

Two divisions: silent and sound. Both divisions to originate on S8 and have a maximum length of 5 minutes.
  • SILENT: Must be "film all the way," originated, edited and submitted on film. S8 and Reg8 submissions must be 18 fps. 16mm submissions must be 24 fps.
  • SOUND: May be originated at whatever frame rate you desire but must be submitted on VHS or miniDV cassette.
What would be an appropriate prize for the winner?

As discussed before, there would probably be no "winner" per say. Simply film makers making their versions of the same story.

I had a new thought. I think that we should do an Urban Ledgend as our story. Urban Ledgnds are pretty timeless and are always fairly short. Plus they lend themselfs to reinterpretation fairly well.

how about something like this:

"two lovers meet. things are unsaid and it's obvious that one of them is waiting for something. suddenly a third person arrives, and everything we've come to expect is turned upside down".

just an example, but such an idea contains enough basic drama to work with while allowing for as much interpretation as you like. maybe flesh it out a little though?

It is not a bad idea to keep things general so that everybody can make something to his/her own likings. If things are fleshed out too much some of us will feel uninspired to participate. I'm not into fairy tales that much, for example, but others could make a fairy tale of this story line.

edit:

But with this story line there is still no script of course. Ah but we can support each other in writing one. what's the time limit? I would say three or five minutes?

I am not familiar with the term "Urban Legend", could you specify this?

thanks,

I don't like the idea of having to shoot S8/R8...Let alone having to shoot it at 18fps.

I would like to participate in this but if I do I want to shoot HD.

Good Luck

Definitely not - did anyone suggest 18 fps only?

Urban legend is better defined as urban myths, stories without any known merit or evidence of ever being true. Modern folk lore without a known history or historical beginning. Poor rumors, bad jokes, or false claims turned into stories, usually horror stories. There is a show in the US called mythbusters that deals with urban myths. Ridiculous stories like eating a whole bag of "pop rocks" (fizzy candy), and then drinking a soda will cause a person to explode.

How about making a decision? Shall we take mattias' story line, and make a five minute film of it, preferably film?

Matt, I think that is a good idea. It's simple and yet it does allow for a lot of interpretation. It also allows for dialog or silence.

Here are a few ground rules:

1. You can shoot it on whatever you would like (HD, DV, Film, or even Matts Cell phone) this is simply how artist choose what best fits their interpretation.
2. The "film" must be held to no longer than 5 minutes but must be more than 4 minutes long. This holds some of us back while at the same time pushing others to think deeper.
3. It can be silent, or have just music or dialog, it's up to the artist interpretation of what they feel best gets their point across.
4. Submissions can be sent into me at the time of completion. All artist that make a submission will get a completed DVD of the whole contest for FREE!
5. More ideas please?!

I think that we should have a cut off time for the contest. Like 3 months from start to finish. Maybe that is to long, let's get your feedback.

I really value the feedback I've gotten so far, I'm glad that there is a lot of interest!

Johnnhud,

all this sounds really great so far. It seems like you've got a good solid grip on the project. the idea of the two lovers sounds really great - open to a lot of interpretation and personal preference.

I think that three months is a good time line, not too long. I need to order film first! It is your deciscion though, if you plan of facilitating the project.
