What is the issue with the H8rx lenses? Are they not typical c mounts? I thought they just have a different back focus than normal c mount lenses. Do the H8rx lenses not work on other c mounts cameras (hope not, cause I just bought a switar 5.5mm c mount originally from an h8rx)? If not, it's kinda confusing that they call it a c mount.
H-8 Rex lenses are special C mount lenses. No other C mount lenses work on them without some kind of an adapter. I can not find any info on them (distance setting for example which is known for other C mount Rex and Non Rex lenses). The Switar 5.5mm lens you got will probably NOT work on other cameras.

I discovered that one can use a 16mm C mount lens on the H-8 rex if one unscrews the lens slightly. This means that the adapter should be **recessed**. BUT since we are going from a c mount to a c mount - this means nothing short of modifiying the turret itself is needed to create such an adapter. One has to widen the turret C mount on the H-8 Rex then create such an adapter.
I wish you can publish the specs of the adapter you mentioned before to see how such a C mount extension can avoid the recessed issue.
But if we are going from a c mount to a c mount, why do we have to modify the turret?
"...in order to use 16mm lenses a spacer ring must be fitted" I read that somewhere , so such adaptor is just an spacer. . And since it's just a matter of of a slight difference with the Rx lenses, I thought about what Lunar just said, if it's possible to just unscrew a regular 16mm lens slightly.
I'm just speculating here, trying to find something to learn.

We posted at the same time, now I understand we are going from cRx to c.

Thanks!

The DS8 fairy would have to creep (fly) into my house one night and convert all my camears to DS8, and provide me with a stash of film equal to my existing stash including 800 feet of direct sound film (which of course does not exist in DS8).

Seriously, If I wanted to switch over I'd want a similar amount of gear as I currently own. I'd need a minimum of three good quality cameras, cheap plentiful supply of various filmstocks (reversla col + B&W).

If I can get a cheap Quarz DS8 camera, I'll give it a go. Would probably only use fomapan though.

To "convert" to DS8? unlikely that I ever will. I might consider using it in significant amounts if I could get a converted Bolex H8 for under 500 euros. Above that price, I'd much sooner use an H16 or R16......

As a hobbyist I don't see much advantage to me over my Regular 8 Bolex H8 which will use 100 foot rolls. I know Super 8 has a bigger image but projected Regular 8 looks great to me.

I would probably try it out if I could find a Canon DS8 for under $200.00.

Well bust my britches! Well said vonfilm,at last someone has dared to speak out about the projection quality of R8. I have a vast amount of archived R8 film (other peoples) and believe my,lots of those images are something to behold.Pin sharp (prime lenses no doubt) and rock steady. No jittery cartridges and dodgy pressure pads to worry you here.
Remember S8 was primarily angled at the convenience filmer until manufactureres saw fit to introduce high quality lenses and good motors.

People who first took it up were,if you like, the masses of camcorder users before the days of DV.Totally convenience stuff. The equipment designers also went silly and tried to manufacture cameras that were just design studies and bugger all else.

My point? You just cannot hack it with that cartridge,it introduces all manner of stresses on the film let alone its inherent weakness with different types of plastic used for the cartridge itself.
Give me the good old spool (metal) loading and sprocket drive. This is where R8 still scores major points in the stability department.Furthermore and to the original point of this thread,I can get R8 much easier than DS8-which would still be better than S8 because of the sprocket drive.
I'll stick with my H8RXVS :D thanks.

Yea, I like my H8RX, too. It gives me 4x what a 16mm 100 foot roll does. That said, I WOULD like to have a double s8 camera that took the new 400 foot load. Wait. Do those 400 foot loads come in double s8 or is it already slit into the cartridge size width only 400 feet long???? See? I know nothing about it. Need more info. Too tired to look it up.
A Bolex Double S8 would be nice with 100 foot reels. Then I would not need to learn how to shoot with yet another camera.

I think people are actually pretty serious in saying having a "free camera" would make the difference. If I were to have inherited a camera or something, of found one for giveaway prices, then I would become very interested in buying some film for it. For example, one of these Pathe Electronics falling into my lap:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... eName=WDVW

would make me very excited.

Otherwise, what's the point?

The constant attempts to point out some perceived advantage with image stability and whatnot over super 8 are laughable for anybody using a Beaulieu 6008 or 7008 or a Leicina Special. These cameras, in normal working condition, are as stable in image generation as pretty much any non-pin registered small gauge system and have all the professional camera features one might need (or can easily be modified to have so). So trying to promote double super 8 as "the professional format" shows a lack of first hand knowledge and hands on experience. It's just parroting old literature and perceptions that don't pan out when held up to the light of real examples. It makes one wonder if you've even shot any?

No, if you want to promote double super 8 truthfully, what appeal it does have is the coolness of the equipment. And the eccentricity of it. Like those Pathe guys do. Are those guys making claims about being the "professional stock" and all that? If that or double super 8 were really that, then you'd be seeing it as what professionals use instead of super 8 for projects like music videos and tv series segues and feature clips and all that stuff. They do not.

The way things evolved a very long time ago, double super 8 is actually the hobby format, while super 8 is the professional format. Whether that was the original intent or not, that's where it stands today. Especially with Kodak now supporting this concept with their negatives in super 8 carts.

Good points! I'm much more interested in shooting 9.5 than DS8. I'd give either a go if I found a camera cheap/free!

Also, I wouldn't 'convert' from super-8 even if I could also shoot IMAX! :) The different formats aren't mutually exclusive...

I have one BTL duolight 16 mm version, costed me nothing (only 20 euro), I'm just sending it to Andrew Hayden, UK to service, I hope he'd get it working and I 'd shoot some stuff with it too during next summer.

Sometimes regular8mm film isn't slit correctly. Before I run any through the WorkPrinter I run it through my fingers. That way, if there is a bump where the film is wider than it should be I can feel it and trim it off with a pair of sissors. Otherwise it gets stuck and the film gets all crinkled up.
It happens enough that I always check the film first before projecting it.
Double Super 8 would need to be slit and the same problem will happen to it.

What cameras take a 100 foot spool of double super 8 film? Besides the Bolex that is.

where to begin...

sorry if i dont come up with the clearest answers at times and that i sometimes miss questions.

as for cameras. i cant help people get free cameras. i can however can generally find canon scoopic ds8's for $350 australian dollars. shipping isnt much on top.

the h8 is the only bolex that can be converted to double super8. its done in california and i think it costs about $450 usd to do. that includes a full service. jk camera does it and there is a link to them in my forum.

i also understand that bolexes without mag attatchments can have them mounted if you wish.

a bolex c mount or d mount h8 needs a spacer between 16mm format lenses and the body. i dont have the exact distance but i reckon its about 1cm. any good camera service agent, especially somebody like jk camera, can make the spacer. they need the body and a properly calibrated lens. they will then match them together and workout the thickness of the spacer.

 The most intelligent statement you've ever made on this site. The new year is off to a good start. Perhaps now you should claim I'm one of Mattias's "many alter-egos" or go into a rant about "German-ism" :?: Or maybe you should add "French-ism" to that since I also think Beaulieus are good cameras and Angenieux makes great lense. Or how about one of the other bizarre things you've come up with over the course of your posts in your "alter-world"?

Blah, blah, blah me all you want. It's just hard to take you seriously, man.
