Might not be able to do much about how you draw but the quality can change simply a bit. Go to an art store and invest in some different shaded pencils, maybe just by 2 different ones just so when you want to add shadows or shading. Get some sharpies maybe also a fine point, extra fine point and an ultra fine point, I guess as long as you know them and your crew knows them and you can explain them it doesn't matter.

Hello,

I got to the first couple of scenes and stoped reading... would a guard really leave a convict alone in a boat (any convict would try to escape, I'm sure) to go look for a missing "party" that is supposed to meet them to help with the prisoner transfer, or is this just written for the convienience of the story? This reminds me of something my Police Officer friend told me, that really got his panties in a wad. He said that in every Hollywood movie, when a Officer is confronted with a "convict" with a gun to a hostage's head, the "convict" says, "drop your gun or I'm going to blow this SOB's head off!!." The Officer always ends up lowering his gun and dropping it. My Officer friend told me that this is the last thing any REAL Police Officer would ever do, this is in their training, and common sence. He was actually pretty irate about it. So when I read something like this, I always think to myself, this is pure unresearched Hollywood fable shit, and I'm sure what's to come next smells the same, so I stop reading.

Well I can't give you any figures off the top of my head but I believe escapes from the penal colony where this is set (Moreton Bay - Australia - early 1840's) were reasonably common. And I wouldn't suggest that a member of the British military stationed at the other end of the world (possibly against his wishes as well) is going to be nearly as dilligent and as well trained and as a 21st century policeman. However you do make a good point and it can be all too easy - but the soldier will be presented as being lazy and a bit thick - and would also have had fair reason to leave the convict there if you read on - ie the prisoner was taken to a small remote island miles from the mainland - so where would he expect the prisoner to go? I think it will work.
