Using 35mm SLRs for animation is not new. It's been done for years by AV producers. Most of what they did was make animated slide presentations.
They used pin registered, maybe Nikon F cameras. So the only difference between the basic SLR and one that will do animation is the pin registration and maybe an extended film load back. They are not "movie" cameras.
They also may change the aspect ratio but I doubt it. They most likely rephotograph the sequence with a standard motion picture camera using an optical printer or computer.
Still camera arrays are used for special effects like multi-view still frame shots as in Buffalo 66. These are also reanimated and use pin registered 35mm still cameras.
