cheap lighting and colour temperature

Jumbo White LED's
How much are these big LEDs? I thought that they were a couple bucks apiece for the small ones. Wouldn't that make the light panel about the same cost as an HMI?
If I remember correctly most LED's emit a very narrow spectrum of light, this might hurt the color reproduction of the film, might also make any sort of filtering not work very well (there is unfortunatly only subtractive filtering :-), dont let this discourage you from testing this, I don't really know what I am talking about :-) and if it works well I will build one too.MovieStuff wrote: Funny you should ask. I've been experimenting with some JUMBO white LEDs. These things are huge; the base is about the size of a quarter and they are BRIGHT, BRIGHT, BRIGHT. Best of all, they are (according to my ancient Kelvin meter) daylight balanced at just under 6000K. Close enough!
Where do you get these jumbo LED's? does mouser sell them? Any idea how to convert the wavelength of a light into a color temperature? (is it even possible?)

just think, you could change the color temperature with a knob and not a filter! :-)
