I'm going to answer my own question. Cameratech, I just reviewed your repair blog and yes there is supposed to be a spring clip on the take up spool, you can see it in several of your photos. Mine must have snapped off, leaving that "slot". No wonder the take up spool wouldn't hold any pressure. Crap. I wonder is this is a common defect. Is this part replaceable? I got this camera off craigslist for $30, so I'm not out much. He did offer to take it back if not happy. I wonder if I should bother. I'd still like to run one of these cameras but don't want to spend a fortune on eBay.
