Re: Double Super & Standard 8 Stock in US
I have read somewhere that kahl got the perforate machine for double per 8 from OWRO the former east German factory...but where did they get one for ds8?...JeremyC wrote:,
I would be interested in your experience with their film, it has been said to me that the perforation of their DS8 stock was not very good but to be fair that may not be the same with Standard 8 and I would hope the DS8 issues is in the past. I would also like to try Kahl's DS8 stock.
Well, kahl has too many secrets that never tell costumers.

Hundreds to thousands.
The spiral reels are parts of a complete system that will also comprise a drying drum on mounts, a motor drive to the drum with pedal control, containers for reels and drum plus accessories. I am designing Cargo as a self-contained gear that can be used even in the most remote places, on or near shooting sets, and of course with commercial labs as a back-up for the case of machine breakdown or as the versatile equipment it is. The parts should be available separately, too.
I have worked as a machinist developer at commercial film labs since 1987. We had our own machine equipment in our lab besides a spiral reel system that I put together from only just available parts. The first drum I had was custom made from stainless steel, another I built myself from wood. Commissioned work included washing as well as processing of more or less every black-and-white stock on the market, negatives, reversal films, intermediates, and prints. I also did some tinting.
We are my business partner and me. What we need is a positive response from people who are willing to invest not in machines but a kit that they use because hand developing offers some unchallengeable advantages.

- â–ºOptimal ratio of film surface to bath volume easily effected;
â–ºBest uniformity within each portion due to perfect agitation;
â–ºFlexibility, instant changes of film formats, baths, and times;
â–ºCleaning of all parts way easier than with machines;
â–ºReadiness, no wasted time as with running of leader;
â–ºBest also for thin film, film protected and slack;
â–ºFuture-proof, manual labour is never obsolete.

Kahl has a very very bad reputation. Clearly Kahl hates consumers customers.kontrabass888 wrote:Wittner is very expensive, and they even add 19% VAT for the postage!JeremyC wrote:Fine talking about B&W DS8 stock but what about colour DS8 (reversal or neg)? It looks like only Wittner and Kahl carry colour reversal DS8 now and its very expensive around 75% of the cost for the equivalent running time of 16mm neg.
Kahl offers free developing service within one year. It is a very good deal, I just ordered two 100' UT 21 double 8mm from them.
As a result of annoying customers pestering him he has decided to supply only to business clients.
So plugging them has no purpose. He is not going to deliver.
Most EU countries have a S8 lab which supplies film too.
Also most Kahl items were terribly terribly overpriced.
VAT on postage is not a choice. It is a regulation.
Kind regards,
André

Well, I tried to search about kahl film online, but seem like almost nobody had used it.
any one could show me some links for some topics about this film?

I emailed Kahl about buying from them and received an email earlier today encouraging me to buy from their online shop with the body of the email giving detailed instructions in english on how to do that because because as, the email explained, their main market hasn't, to date, encompassed english speaking countries. It sounded to me that Kahl is very open to selling film and stuff to you and me.aj wrote:kontrabass888 wrote:

I have checked the pricing of DS8 colour against Wittner and one of Kahl's two colour offerings is cheaper than Wittner's only colour DS8 offering. The only thing I have heard against Kahl is that the quality control on their DS8 perforating isn't great leading to problems. If any one has some experience of using Kahls DS8 film I would be interested in hearing about it.

Kahl publicly declared so themselves.
Check publications.
If he reopened it must be of because of disappointing sales. Which would be easy to understand.

It is interesting to read about a new movie film home processing kit for R8 and S8. Is that correct? I have a home darkroom and different processors. New suppliers could get me developing and shooting movies again. Say more. I am a member of a local film makers school that uses S8. They should know about this.

Re: Double Super & Standard 8 Stock in US
I plan to carry both color and black and white R8 film in the near future. I should have the B/W in mid January. The color R8 will be Wittnerchrome 200D and the black/white will be ORWO UN54. Since this comes from Europe the price won't be cheap but at least R8 will be available in the USA. If I can get FOMApan, I will carry that also.

John, can you send an email out to your existing customers once you them ready? Also a list of labs in the U.S. still processing would be good… guessing Spectra and Dwaynes still for reversal Regular 8?
