Possible N. Korea Point of Contact

Post by scott »

There is a tour company with info at http://www.koryogroup.com/ that runs N. Korean tours. Also, there is a connection between the tour operators and the producers of 2 recent independent films shot in N. Korea:

http://www.astateofmind.co.uk/
http://www.thegameoftheirlives.com/

That may be a good start for acquiring some of this film stock.

Good Luck. Oh, and if the info I provided leads to some film being acquired, be a good chap and send me off a roll!

Cheers,

If Kim Yong-Ill won't have you talk to a representative from a North-Korean company directly, you might approach Taiwanese branches of that company or Taiwanese retailers to get hold of some person or people making contact between you and them.

Carlos.
Well you know they probably have the internet...they have it in China too, got a friend out there right now. Just because they're Communists doesn't quite mean that high tech means a donkey cart.

Actually, they probably don't have the internet in most cases. The only official NK internet presence I was able to dig up is the official propaganda/news agency that's hosted in Japan. Apparently '.kp' is the reserved domain, but there are no sites hosted on it yet.

I think everyone is aware that Communism doesn't necessary involve donkey carts, but NK is a totally different situation.

Check out this place:

Its a blog site for all discussions on North Korea--all positions and perspectives on any topic welcome. I'm sure we can find some info on this film stock.

Also, for a fantastic, very human documentary on North Korea, check out the film North Korea: Beyond the DMZ.

say, Mr. Hollwood Shop .Com, this is a business opportunity for you. At such prices, you could buy
Definitely! I dunno if there are ebargoes and stuff on North Korea? Tho since the film was bought in Taiwan i guess it's not a problem anyway.

I'm now officially obsessed with this... for one thing, i wonder if there are other different stocks avaliable!?!?

I'd probably boycott Walmart s8 developing if I even lived in the USA, but I'd happily buy film stock from NK! How's that for hypocracy! :D
Just send it here to canada first, I will put a sticker over the "Made in North korea" part and forward it on to you. i can also do this for any cuban goodies you might want to !

By the way, its just a joke Mr Helms and Mr Burton. I don't need you guys making special laws restricting me entry into the United States.
you know, something you can slip through congress on the 11,555 page of some new traffic law.

China has a big firewall which prevents the Chinese of being able to surf outside China. I don´t know the other way round though.

They've also got thousands and thousands of university students enrolled all over the world, researching and sending back mountains of data back to the homeland...

They's been doing this for decades. I used to organize the beer for parties and movies showing commie and anti commie films to hundreds of students who were members of the Chinese students and the Taiwanese Student Associations... this was in the early 80's..

AAMOF I'm teaching some this semester... Last week when I asked 'em about this, and asked them about their version of big brother, the 1984 version, and I got stone silent replies... but that might be due to it being the first week of classes..

Spies...

You'd think the more intellectual elements of North Korean society would be interested in films and other kinds of art that openly criticize totalitarian regimes, especially when they are out of the country... on the other hand, they probably have agents watching their activities even in the US or the UK...

MovieMaker wrote:A German user posted in another forum that he just came back from a trip to Taiwan where he bought Super8 film in a supermarket.

He asked the owner of a Chinese restaurant to translate what´s written on the package but has been told that it is Korean. After going to a Korean restaurant he knows now that it is a Super8 daylight reversal film, 13 DIN / 16 ASA, manufactured by some company named "Kim Tschek" in Wonsan, Northkorea.
I won't believe it until I see it.

Been on these Taiwanese filmmaking forums and there's no mention of any films available in any super markets there.

Suppose it is available I would suspect the film is made by the Chinese film manufacturer Lucky rather then North Korea. And not for home movies but for surveilance purposes, but why such a slow film is a mystery. Maybe the cameras operate at a slow shutter speed perhaps?

And as far as I am aware, there is no super 8 film manufacturing in China. You can get 35mm and 16mm though, I have used their 35mm still negative film made by Lucky, it is grainy and has colours very similar to the early Agfa films.

Never the less it is interesting and I would hope it is true that this stuff is available...it'll be an interesting alternative.

I would like to know which super market in Taiwan, so I could get a friend there to get some for everyone interested on this forum.8)

By the way, Ive heard of some 35mm still film called Lucky Star film. Apparently, quite grainy with outlandish colours...don't know if this film comes from the same company that you were discussing, Bill. I was chatting with someone from the West in a chat room who orders this film to create arty images.

Strange...a work colleague has a Chinese friend inside China and she regularly emails him, tells him about websites she's visited.

Methinks China is not quite as closed as that.
