Single 8 film & processing in UK / Europe

Post by al77 »

where do UK single 8 shooters in the uk buy their film & processing? Are there cheaper options than the widescreen centre? i'm new to single 8, thought i'd give it a go for some steadier images & low light action with a Fujica AX100 i picked up.

i appreciate this will have been covered before, but it's really difficult to search the forum for info on single 8. shame you don't seem to be able to search by thread title only. a search for "single AND 8 AND uk" gives me 1400+ results!

thanks :-)

I bought stock from Retro in Japan, includes processing, and must purchase it, and be sent to them for processing in units of five. Widescreen will do just one or two rolls. I just telephoned the Single 8 professor with my plastic, and a few days later FEDEX delivered the box, strait to my fridge.

I think I'll send my found stock film cartridges (came with ebay cams) to Frank in the Netherlands.

[edit] Retro man, professor single 8, told me the AX100 works fine with a 1.5 alkaline battery.

The AX100 is a 230 degree camera. It will have as much or as little motion blur as other moving object in any 230 degree camera. The difference between 230 and 220 degrees is barely noticeable.

Any thoughts on the Fujica Z600? I got one lying around with macro attachment and stuff, but as the single 8 film seems expensive I haven't tried it yet. Maybe I should?

is it that expensive? looks like it will work out similar to the cost of tri-x or plus-x?

The Z600 is a full-featured silent Single-8 camera. It's really only exceeded in quality by the Z800, which has the multi-coated lens and of course the ZC1000, which has the interchangeable lens. The Z600 is really compact, although the lens is a little short. But it had a telephoto attachment to take it to 10x.

On that page he says "The little black spots are remains of the backing layer that you can remove with the help of some film cleaner." - anyone know if this is this a common problem with single-8, or is it something that occurs with Frank's processing as opposed to official fuji processing in japan or whatever?

Hi,

AFAIK the problem with the black spots has been fixed... (It was due to Frank's processing - the black layer wasn't removed correctly.)

That's good to hear, thanks...

I may just send my film to the Widescreen Centre anyway, as what with airmail etc it probably won't work out cheaper to get Frank to develop it...

Anyway, I have to finish shooting it first!!! :) I'm using the RT200 and I don't have a daylight filter so I'm waiting till I find an interesting suitably well-lit interior/night exterior to shoot!...

It's cool to have such a pocket-sized camera to carry around!

------->8----

I checked my records, the shipping cost was 3000 Japanese Yen (£15), and the film costs (five rolls with processing inclusive) about 14,000 Yen or £70 at today's exchange rate.

I bought ten rolls, five 50 and five 200. That's about £15 - £16 a roll with processing (I have to pay for the postage back to retro, they'll cover the return postage of the processed film). Better deal than most except for processed paid kodachrome.

The bitch is waiting a few weeks after the shoot. I'm planning my shoot in the next week or two, so I have not had any processed yet. The Single 8 films arrived Parcel Force, which means it was Japanese Post office, not FedEX, DHL, or TNT.
