I was recently given a "brand new" Bell & Howell 1481 projector. This is the funkiest projector I've seen so far. Might have been featured in some 70's futuristic movie I'm looking for info and tips because, though it is mint cosmeticaly speaking, the back reel won't move an inch and thus, won't pull and roll the film… So any help would be gladly apreciated !
a) can you turn that reel by hand? if not, there's probably some "fix everything for a secure transport"-feature (like on older scanners).
b) even though the projector looks mint, it's several years old. Some of the belts used in projectors have been made out of plastic/rubber. And some of the plastics/rubbers used in the 60s/70s simply tends to "disintegrate" after 20-30 years. Therefore I would guess that your belt's gone
Well, I've had a peep inside and the only belt I could find is the thin one that's used for the frame counter. The front and back reels are connected one to another with a long transversal bar and gears. When you set to play, stop or backwards play, there are parts that are moving to hold or release the back reel's core and a metal plate seems to be trying to push a turning plastic wheel on the back of the reel's core, which is covered with some kind of baize. Weird. But to answer your first question : yes I can move the reel by hand. It's just that when the transport control is set to stop, the reel is held still.
Maybe there's a similar piece of cork in your B&H that's damaged...
