Anyone familiar with the film 'Little Thomas'?
When I was staying in Vancouver, Canada in 1999, I decided to go out to the cinema on my last night there. Instead of going to see a Hollywood film, I chose to visit a rather small cinema which was currently screening an international film festival. The film I saw was 'Little Thomas', a Scandinavian film, possibly from Norway or Finland perhaps. It was an enjoyable film about an iliterate farmer whose wife hires an attractive female tutor for him and an affair starts. It is a comedy that gets a bit far fetched as it goes on and ends in tradgedy. The editing and the cinematography were quite impressive.
Regardless, I am finding it so hard to track this film down. There is a video shop near me which specialises in getting in hard to find films and foreign films and the owner has never heard of this film. There is also a similar video shop in the city with rare, sought after films and this shop does not have it either. I have run many internet searches too and I have found no trace of the film or any references to it online. Has anyone here actually heard of this film or seen it or know how to obtain copies of it?

I remember a swedish film about a farmer and a librarian. comedy, lovestory, but don't think there was a wife. Oh, wait there was something with a graveyard. Yes, thats where they first met.
Can you tell us something more about the movie? Any names of places that might make it more easy to find out from country it is from?

I cannot recall any names of places in the film unfortunately. Most of the film is set on a farm. Though there are occasional visits to a town, including a scene in a supermarket. There is also a scene in a church. As the farmer and the young tutor get more and more intimate, they have a baby. It is the baby which is named Thomas. Yet strangely, this is all part of some elaborate plan by the farmer's wife. She really wants a baby but cannot have one naturally. So she needed the tutor for this purpose.
There was definitely no graveyard or librarian in this film, Rollef, but that sounds quite amusing!

No, not Danish.
And I did search the Swedish and Norwegan film institutes also. Nothing comes up under that name.
Are you shure of the title?
Remember any actors?
Or even director's name?
I thought that a film about someone wanting her man to shag some else must be Finnish... (Did they drink a lot?)

Never heard anything about finnish women wanting their men to shag someone else!
But I agree with the drinking thingy, if they did drink a lot perhaps it is finnish...

The idea and setting You described reminds me of finnish director Matti Ijäs and his film "Lahja" from 1997. Unfortunately much of his movies are made for television and hard to come by. ( I do not have it either).
disclaimer: this is just a proposal, I am not claiming this is the film in question.

Someone on another forum has actually found some information on this film. It's alternative title is Kleine Teun (Little Tony). I am sure that it was titled 'Little Thomas' when I saw it at the cinema though. Since I have googled the alternative title, I have discovered that it's a Dutch film by director Alex van Warmerdam. Apparently, he has only made a few films yet he is well known for his dark sense of humour. According to one website, he also wrote the script and composed the music for this film, in addition to directing.
I have found no information on this film being available on vhs or dvd. There is a post on another forum by someone who has been looking to obtain copies of the other films that this director has made over the years but according to the poster, most of Warmerdam's movies have not been released on video.

I sort of know the DP of that film and I will ask him about it the next time I see him. I've seen the film too and thought it was great. I don't think it's easily available, but I found this:
