Save Our Kodachrome S.O.K. Club!

I have fully made my decision on the Kodachrome 40 discontinuation predicament . My decision is I want Kodak to keep Kodachrome. I came to this conclusion after I got 3 rolls of K40 back. They looked so cool, retro, and clear .

So I am officially forming a “club” called S.O.K. (Save Our Kodachrome). Join at your discretion.

Much as I agree with you, this is very much a dead issue. There will be no more Super8 Kodachrome.('')

Rather than worry about something that can't be changed, consider your options. If you want to keep using the Kodachrome, get a regular 8mm camera, contact John Schwind and get some film, and you're back in business. It's also a good way to learn about threading film.

No matter what, just keep shooting.(':lol:')

Unlike some other real downers around here, I will respect film-idaho's official decision on the "Kodachrome 40 discontinuation predicament."

His decision is that he wants Kodak to keep Kodachrome.

So, I'll join the club. What do we have to do?

Will there be special group activities like "Bring me the head of Joe Gioielli" if there happens to be some dramatic retraction from Kodak?

Maybe we could get cool club jackets that read "I'm not Joe. I never gave up."?

Whatever, I've always wanted to be in a cool club with an acronym like S.O.K.. If any doomsayers like Joe mess with us, we'll... just...SOK him! :twisted:

The loss of kodachrome shouldn't stop you from using Super 8. I'm just glad they replaced it with ektachrome and didn't can color reversal all together. Anyways, what kind of action do you plan to take?

Neither R8 nor 16mm are an option for me. Some of the main issues I have with R8 are the smaller picture and especially the lack of a cartridge. 16mm is too expensive for me as an amateur and probably too professional to be in my immediate future as for my bread and butter career.

However, even if we'd somehow get Kodak or someone else to keep producing K40 emulsion (maybe under another name) in S8, we'd most likely have to prepare for dramatically rising prices. The three main remaining advantages of K40 would then be, apart from aesthetical values, the extraordinary low grain making it possible to blow S8 K40 up to 16mm, universal compatibility, and archivability.

As for what we should do first, I'd propose making the hommage video to K40 I sketched out here. During the last, at first glance exclusively informatory seeming sentances, we could show a visual comparison of K40 with its replacement 64T from Sparky's and Kent's material, adding a dramatical, alerting momentum to compare what we've lost with what we're given to 'replace' it while hearing those short sentences of Kodak's failed business strategics and the sad short dates of the end of K40. I think this video would definitely have organizing potential.

It's not so much producing the emulsion...K40 will still be produced in other formats.....it seems the key issue is processing.

Kodak has decided to destroy it's Swiss lab and sell the land, presumably the cash-strapped corporation has an offer it cannot refuse at the moment.

Apparently they've not asked if anybody else would untertake K40 super 8 processing, nor have they taken advantage of the fact that Dwaynes in the USA are already doing it...they're cancelling the super 8 version of K40 altogether. A tragedy because Kodachrome is a unique film in it's construction and process and nothing else can look quite like it.

However I'd join the club. Never say never, as long as some sort of Kodachrome is still being made in sheets for cutting down to 35mm and 16mm there is always a chance that somebody might decide to modify a K14 machine to process super 8.

As much as I gathered from passed threads, there are people working on getting different K-14 machines working and on the market. Until then, there'll probably be Dwayne's around for at least some time from now.

I'd love to be wrong and I hope they bring Koda back in Super8. But if they don't, I can still shoot it in reg8. So I can't be that sad.

Kodachrome 40 also exists in the DS8 format. Buy a DS8 camera and you are in business. There are Russian, Czech and of course the Bolex and Canon versions out there. DS8 Kodachrome 40 can be purchased from Wittner in germany and John Schwind.

What can people tell me about the Russain DS8 cameras, the ones Olex sells? I'm almost tempted...if E64 turns out not to be what I need...

Angus, I have the Quartz 2x8S3. Not too bad of a camera. I've only shot Foma on it so far and the meter seems accurate. I'll probably get a load of K40 for it 1) When my S8 stock runs dry or 2) That format gets canned and I need to stock up.

The only problems I've had is on one occasion the motor crapped out. I had to keep tapping it on the side, but it stopped after I flipped the roll over and when the lens is as wide as it will go, there's an obstruction in the finder the shape of an arc maybe 1/5 of the way, but it doesn't show up on the film. Other than that, the bulk and that the meter is not automatic (you have to set the aperture manually), it's still a good cam.

Image registration is steady and I like the backwinding feature...I'll be using it more when my K40 stocks dwindle or just use R8.
