WalMart, the great saviour of small format filmmaking...
Moderator: Andreas Wideroe
When you use True Cost Accounting practices, you'll see Wal-Mart actually costs us more in the long run.
With the influx of cheap Chinese products, this truly affects the American economy and its dollar value. We still don't know the TRUE value of Chinese currency, but one thing is for sure and that's the true cost of such cheap product mega stores is not being taken into account when paying those low everyday prices. There is always a cost and a True cost which is often overlooked or not accounted for specific reasons.
Save now, but rest assured you'll pay later!
Anyone here read Kurt Vonnegut Jr at all? I love his stuff, anyways I'm often reminded of the irrational fear of inhaling microscopic Chinese people who harm us un-intentionally...

I agree. Darwinism is a good concept, it's called evolution, and it definitely involves common sense as an instinct to gather as a community and care for others. Don't confuse that with social-Darwinism that doesn't believe in survival of the fittest (and gathering increases the degree of fitting as it maintains individuals helping each other out) but in survival of the strongest.wahiba wrote:But it is.steve hyde wrote:Let's not just accept Mr. Darwin's science as universal truth. "Plus, I can dive into the $5 dvd bin and get some great, cheezy b-movies while I'm there!"
I like this DVD bin a lot. I got "Panic Room" on Superbit for $5.50 and some great kung fu 4-packs.

I mean, really... how many times do you need to see "Panic Room"?
I do find it funny how big-box retail has so successfully convinced people they need stuff like this by making them feel they're getting a real bargain.

How about Costco? We don't have one here... at least I don't think we do... but they seem more pro-worker than most big-box. I wonder what it would take to get them accepting our S8 for the same price as ChinaMart. Maybe cheaper!camera8mm wrote:chinesemart isnt the only place where one can drop off film and have it processed. According to Qualex (Eastman Kodak division, for processing) Other chain drug stores will take the film as well.

Actually, that is incorrect. Galileo and the Church got along quite well and they appreciated his findings. He had friends in high places but he also had enemies among his "peers". This is from an excellent article by Jonah Goldberg about Galileo:steve hyde wrote: Gallileo was almost burned at the stake for proving that the earth revolved around the sun. .
...Galileo's greatest and most-enduring enemies were not the orthodox clerics of the Church, but his fellow scientists. This was not a case of a superstitious, bureaucratic Church snuffing the light of reason. It was a case of petty and jealous men trying to use the Church to kneecap a whistleblower. If Galileo's way of things won the day, a lot of people would have looked like fools and, possibly, lost their jobs. And, this had less to do with Copernicanism or heliocentricity than with the fact that Galileo represented the introduction of mathematics into the world of physics. Needless, to say, if you were a physicist who didn't know jack about math and, all of a sudden, this guy was going to make math a requirement, you'd be bummed.
The entire article can be found here:

I recommend highly recommend it.

Jack about math?
*suddenly starts sympathizing with those people that intend to burn hosts of the math disease*
And no, of course I'm *not* serious. Let's just say I hate figures, and it's mutual.

I never said I *need* anything. You have a real gift for misconstruing the words that people write. Do you own any DVDs? Why not pay less? I have my fair share of Criterion DVDs but I enjoy getting a good deal when it comes around.

Why thank you!Evan Kubota wrote:You have a real gift for misconstruing the words that people write.

Very very few. About 15 if I counted (quickly) right.Evan Kubota wrote: Do you own any DVDs?
Most of them were gimme's from film festivals. I remember buying 3 things retail -- the Criterion of Tarkovsky's "Andre Rublev"; "Waiting for Guffman", which I've watched at least 20 times (unguilty pleasure); and the 6 DVD box set of the NYC documentary, which was a birthday present for my wife when she moved to NYC to move in with me.
The few others I bought I got used from half.com. If I were going to buy "Panic Room", I would pay much more AND shipping to get it used rather than buy it for $5.99 at WalMart.
Did you really just ask me that? Maybe your reading is as half-ass as your reasoning. ;) Didn't you recently quote me as noting the difference between "price" and "cost"?Evan Kubota wrote: Why not pay less?
I think I've been very, very clear why I choose not to pay less.
Why not? Are you trying to win a citizenship award? :roll:super8man wrote:...off to Walmart...I'll try not to disturb anything else in the store while I am leaving...
Or, are you part of this goofball's tribe:

Walmart is great! It is convenient for dropping off film, and I love the low, low price! It's the next best thing to the pre-paid mailer.

It makes s8 just that much more fun!
Thank God in Heaven for Walmart!

This is why I am so cynical regarding the state of the world. The facts have been presented and you still get those that choose to be blissfully ignorant.

Since I am both a DVD collector and concerned about the overwhelming abundance of consumer waste we are producing as a planet, I read ccortez' post with interest. I think what he was addressing was the proliferation of associated refuse material in these retailers efforts at "creating" need for superfluous consumer junk.
Tim
And you be cool with collectors, dude. Its a ridiculous and irrational obsession that most of us have a hard time explaining or defending (sometimes I just hold my Criterion "Solaris" and caress its beautiful cover. No, really. )ccortez wrote:Very very few. About 15 if I counted (quickly) right.Evan Kubota wrote: Do you own any DVDs?
