Can you really load a daylight roll in daylight???

Post by flyingsquirrelsnake »

Ok, this is a head scratcher. It's a daylight roll (16mm) but the sticker on the plastic canister says "OPEN ONLY IN TOTAL DARKNESS." I know I'm not to load a cam in direct sun, but is total darkness really required?

Yes, I searched. To no avail.

load in subdued light.

personaly, I'lll load in a black bag because I hate the idea of losing any film. But, loading in low light can be ok but just make sure the film is tight to the reel and run off about 5ft of film before you start to shoot the stuff thats keeper..

The load in darkness recommendation is to avoid any chance of getting edgefog, from light that shines into the small gap between the film roll and the spool flange. If you quickly load in subdued light, you may see a bit of edgefog; taking your time in bright sunlight will produce much more fogging. With Super-16, any edgefog is more critical, as the image area is close to the edge, whereas with Regular-16, you would likely only fog the perforation area.

If you can, use a darkroom or changing bag to avoid any risk of fogging. But if you can tolerate a bit of edgefog, loading in subdued light is often acceptable with spools.

Allright. Thanks; I just wanted to clear up this little discrepancy before actually loading my K3 for the first time. I suppose I wonder due to the fact I usually shoot with the need to change rolls quickly, i.e. unscripted action.

From the one really close experience I had with 16mm we just loaded plus-x in daylight but not direct and it was fine.
