Uher 1000 - question about tape

Post by lunni »

Hi,

Some time ago I bought Uher 1000 Report Pilot recorder from ebay. I haven't ever used portable reel to reel tape recorders before, so now I'm wondering what kind of tape to use with it. Is it 1/4" tape or something else? Are there significant differerencies with different types and brands? And then, of cource, what is a good place to shop tapes and reels?

Cheers,
Henri

The world of analog sound recording's in a bit of disarray right now. The last remaining manufacturer of reel to reel magnetic tape, Quantegy, went bankrupt last year. I heard that another company was reopening the plant, but don't have any recent news on this.

Uhers take 1/4 inch reels, of 5 inches diameter. Quantegy 461 was a good all purpose tape, but is no longer being made.

You may find some 1/4 inch reels on ebay; some of them may suffer from "sticky shed" syndrome as they are so old and poorly made.

Now that I had a look at it, I figure they are back in business (?)

There will be 3 companies supplying tape in a few months time.

Here's a good forum on analog sound recording, heaps of stuff on reel to reels:
