How do you judge the exposure?
Does your camera have an exposure meter, or do you use an external exposure meter?

Or do you just look at the amount of light around you and think "Ah, well, I guess it will work with F1.8 apeture..." ?

Yeah, more info needed!

You're shooting outdoors, right? Late afternoon light can be beautiful, and I imagine that Tri-X would be sensitive enough, depending on how late you go with it.

What camera do you have?

The Canons I have indicate the aperture in the viewfinder even in auto mode, and will tell you if the scene is under or over-exposed (according to how their meters perceive the scene, that is- exposure is subjective).

I recommend you check out your camera's manual- it will probably have a basic guide to how your camera's exposure system works, which is a starting point.
