My wife's miniDV cam with an external mic. A heck of a lot cheaper than going out and buying a minidisc, DAT, or flash recorder. Just stuff it into a shoulder bag and rig up a dual pole trigger cable to start both your S8 and camcorder simultaneously.
Et, voila... wild sync recording for about $3. As super8man always reminds us, keep it cheap. ;)

Good point. Most consumer miniDV cams have 12 and 16-bit recording modes these days, but everyone should make sure that the default setting isn't 12. I know my wife's $300 Sharp came from the factory that way. It took five seconds to bump it to full 16-bit.BigBeaner wrote:Same thing, mini-dv. Only thing I add is make sure its 16 bit audio and not 12. 16 is cd quality or around I heard. Also there are expensive things to use an audio cassette tape and have it captured in FCP in the computer too.

For short scenes, it is worth knowing that even ordinary portable mono cassette recorders in good condition are stable to better than 0.2%. That is a quarter of a second in one and a half minutes.
I've tested a large number of both portable recorders and those in hi-fi stacks and none of them has been outside the 0.2% performance.

Not at this time, no. And no phantom power.audadvnc wrote:Downix, do you lay down pilot tone to your Nagra III when recording sync audio? Do you use the 24fps flash contacts? Do you have phantom power on your deck?
I've been trying to get a set of schematics for a pilot tone generator, but no luck so far.
that's crazy, never seen one of those... I like the look of the cartridge! Weird.gianni1 wrote:I use a Sony Ruvi camcorder.
... wow, googleing for more info on it, I found a page with early digital cameras with built in floppy disk driveS! 8O http://www.digicamhistory.com - interesting site...
I record sound on Minidisk mostly... tho never attempted any kind of synch/dialogue on super-8 really... just record sound effects etc... Need a new one, it won't charge the battery any more.
