Bolex B8 series or Bell and Howell Filmo. The Bolex can be found with a zoom lens, with the filmos it is a triple turret max.

Do not discount the Russians. The Quarz V is a good basic camera.

As e-bay generally dictates what R8 cameras we have access to, I suppose the pocket Bolex line is your best bet closely followed by the Bell and Howell line of R8 cameras. You could spend the next six months in an attempt to purchase a Beaulieu MR8 or TR8, or a Camex. Frankly, I go with the B&H line of single lens cameras.
Good Luck

I have a Bolex D8L and I can't say but good things about it. Plus, it's a pure beauty.

Of course the H8 is better. However, it's considerably more expensive, heavier and bigger. The choice may depend on your demand of portability.

Get my H8rx4 with preset switar macro primes. It even has two spool adapters.
It could be later converted to double S8?

Although there are a number of 8mm cameras out there. It would depend on how you would like to handle the camera and shooting.
reflex or non reflex?
magazine load, semi magazine load or reel loading?

zoom lens or primes.

My personal favotive is the camex reflex. limited on lenses, hard to find, but excellent optics and features. (backwinding for optical effects!- which a number of 8mm cameras have, not in super 8)

carena zoomex - angenieux lens, auto threading, solid images, 60s deisgn.

Love my early Camex reflex. Took two to make one, and then had to apply a spot of "super glue" to solidly attach the zoom lens (no prime-lens intentions); (just enough missing metal at the camera-to-lens base made that necessary) . But, what a fine camera.
