Post by Matias »

Does it really increase steadiness and image shapness?

This thing is too expensive. Seeing the price was a real turn off.

I would be interested in knowing which cameras are oblivious to the jittery Kodak cartiridges and those that cannot handle them and produce unstable images. I remember someone on this forum mentioning that the Canon 1014e produced steady images in spite of running with a bad cart (which does not suprise me) and that the Particular Nizo camera that was used showed the vertical instability. I would like to know which cameras can handle these bad cartridges and which cannot.

my canon 814 handles them pretty good. i've shot 8 bad carts and got a few jittery scenes on two of them, and from what i heard when i showed the clips here the jitter isn't as bad as what many others have gotten. all carts sounded weird though, like a coffee grinder, so i know they were bad ones.

My Bauer 709 and 715 cameras both worked also pretty good with these bad cartiridges.

Hi Matias.
I have ordered the pressure plate. I read the testimonials and reports and I'm found them to be very encouraging. I'd welcome an increase in picture steadiness and the elimination of 'focus breathing'. It seems the plate makes the biggest difference with negative stock and Ektachrome 7240. I shoot Vision 200T from time to time. Users have reported that 7240 yields significantly sharper images with the plate...this is good news since I've been rather dissappointed with this stock so far.

Out of curiosity, how much does this pressure plate cost - in US dollars? I have had really crappy results too with Ektachrome 7240 - soft images. Strangely, I was talking to someone once who shoots regularly on 7240 and absolutley loves this stock. Though I think that he was shooting on regular 8 format - built in pressure plate - explains why.

My limited experience with the jittery cartridges have shown to me that only my Russian tank wind-up can handle them with some certainty. My Nikon and Sankyo cameras were not up to the task, even my cherished Nizo.

I have always wondered about the common complaints about the 7240 being so unsharp. In 16mm it can look pretty good. So much so it looks better than Kodachrome when transferred to video. Of course, that is what it was made for in the first place. Maybe this pressure plate can bring about a new appreciation for 7240 and the different pallette it provides? Love to see anyone's result with it using the pressure plate.

Considering this is the Russian Quartz your experience is the same as reported from other Quartz users shooting the "Jitter bugs". Loved to see their mechanical internals.

As far as I understand the info given for the PP it was develeoped to resolve the jitter/unsharpness of the VNF 7240 and Vision 200 T in particular due to a diference in film thickness vs the K40 (K40 tunes carts) but quite a few people (Andec WEB site) reports better results when used with the K40 too.

From the Andec site:
This all can be particularly observed when using new film material like VNF 7240 (Ektachrome 125 ASA, color reversal film stock) and
Vision 200 T (color negative film stock).

As I confirmed long ago in a similar thread,my Russian Quartz takes no prisoners and storms through recognised jittery batch numbered cartridges. My Nizo hates them!

Hi Eric,

I haven´t seen any companies that sell the pressure plate outside Germany or England. But don´t bother overseas postage and packing: The whole case with the pressure plate in it weighs I guess a third of a K40 Super-8 cartridge...

I recommend Andec Filmtechnik in Berlin because they also take creditcards.

Greetings,

Christian
