Canon 814 Electronic Flash Sync socket

Post by jessh »

Acording to this the Canon 814 Electronic can not be used to generate a sync signal without a modification. Does anyone have any more information on this or know anything about what it would take to mod it?

"It seems that despite high hopes, it was found that the new Canon 814E would not respond to the pulse control system although a 1-to-1 flash contact is fitted. The snag lies mainly in a new type of shutter release which ends in a relay and this cannot possibly respond to the required 18 or 24 switchings per second.

However, Fencolor have found a way of overcoming this problem in a simple manner and they will do the slight modification needed for £12. In all respects the camera will work normally when not required for sync sound shooting." November 1972 Movie Maker Magazine

my 814e gives me one spike per frame, even in slow motion mode.

 If "Fencolor found a way of overcoming this problem ... for £12 " in 1972 possibly Canon also did over the years until the Xl version was released. Obviously the latter had been equipped with an extra sound jack.

There is a downloadable manual at this site.

Do not know if the cam is identical to yours but I posted 3 pages that shows the flash sync socket.

The manual is here:
ftp://ftp.filmshooting.com/pub/scans/ca ... -black.zip

In addition it seem to have an external pulse/pic output with the 8-pin din socket.

is yours the black XL version?
The one I have here is not, it has some other issues that might not even be fixable, but I am still curious.

If it is not then does anyone know of a way to tell if it will work besides just trying it? (so that you could know when buying a camera)

If I remember correctly the xl version doesn't have 24fps, which seems odd since it is the newer version with more sound features. Or am I wrong about this?

no, it's the non xl "autozoom electronic". mine has microprism focusing though, and they say it's supposed to be split image, so it's not a completely normal one. perhaps it's just the viewfinder was replaced or something...

well mine is also microprism, and the manual says it is suposed to be microprism. http://www.kolumbus.fi/puistot/c.htm says that it is split image, so maybe that is what it origionally was when it was released(1972). So I am asuming that they made some changes before they stopped making them in 1977, including taking out the relay, so hopefully this one will also work with the flash sync socket. someone wrote 1977 on the manual, can't find a date anywhere else, but that and the microprism focusing seems to be a good sign. Although I still don't know if this camera is even fixable, batteries corroded the leads to the battery compartment and the corrosion appears to go atleast a little bit into the body of the camera, wont know how far until I can find a screwdriver that is the right size to take out the screws holding the handle release switch, they managed to make it the perfect size to where none of my jewlers screwdrivers fit well enough.

"... they say it's
supposed to be split image" "They" might be wrong...as some information from the Kolumbus List is as well. One improvement towards the 814e XL version was the replacement of the microprism by the more expensive split image focussing feature.
In respect to the distance meter your camera(s) can therefore be regarded as normal. [
