R8 Film Clip: Mardi Gras, 1958

Post by tfunch24 »

Since Mardi Gras is this week, I uploaded this short home movie that my late grandfather shot in New Orleans during the 1958 Mardi Gras parade. It's a DIY telecine, right off the projection screen with a variable speed projector. It's about eight megs in size and slightly underexposed. Slight flicker.

I have a lower quality clip of the same parade for those of us stuck with slow dial-up connections, but I'm just too tired to upload both of them tonight (the smaller version is four megs.)

I hope you enjoy it. Feedback appreciated.

Very nice color. A little fuzzy, focus could be better.
This is a good example of how nice R8 can be. It is R8 and not 16 isn't it?
Some of those burned frames could be removed and replaced with copies or blends of adjacent frames.
What kind of video camera did you use?

Glad you enjoyed it, Michael. Yes, it is Double 8mm. I used a Sony DCR-TRV840 Digital 8 camcorder for the transfer. I'm between telecine devices at the moment--I'm upgrading to a WorkPrinter, Jr.

Here is the smaller clip for ppl with slow dial-up connections:

It's 4 megs--I tried to get a file that was smaller than one meg but the few compressed copies I made of that size looked extremely horrible. Wahiba, how do you do it? Your small films look so good, considering the compression scheme you claim to use.

Since Mardi Gras is tomorrow, I'd thought I'd...

*BUMP*

...the topic to the top.

Enjoy.
