16mm:DTS Arrives.

Post by Old Uncle Barry »

8O For the interested parties out there in small gauge land I have just read an article in my trade paper Cinema Technology that 16mm with DTS sound has been successfully used at the Venice Film Festival. It uses exactly the same time-coded synchronisation method as 35mm and retains the normal (usually poor) optical soundtrack. All this is squeezed in to the sound track area.
What makes this particularly interestong is the fact that the time code (photographic) is read via the existing exciter lamp setup but is split and decoded by the seperate decoder/CDRom player.
The reason I make this posting is that many of you boffins out there have been utilising this (or similar) sync-pulse method to tape,CD,Minidisc for a long time now and they have only just caught up!About time too as this really makes 16mm grown up like its sibling S8.
