Where to find rubber lens hood and eyecup for Zeiss Ikon S8?

Post by RustyB »

I have a Zeiss Ikon Voigtlander Super8mm, in great conditon, and I'd like to actually start shooting stuff with it, rather than just displaying it in my collection.

Anyways, like many of my cameras, the rubber pieces are long gone. I'd like to shoot with a lens hood, but the lens has no threads, so aftermarket pieces can't be used. It just has some lugs on the end, I guess that's what held on the original hood. I'd also like to put an eyecup on it, since it's tough to shoot without one, and I'm guessing it's letting all kinds of stray onto the film.

Any advice on where to find this sort of thing, or should I just look for parts cameras. I don't see to many of these, so I'm scared spares are hard to find.

Thanks!!

What diameter is the lens? I have a Canon sunshade that doesn't use any threads - it has a screw which tightens a metal piece kind of like a hose clamp around the smooth outside of the lens. I guess this was an alternative to making sunshades with filter threads also. I believe it's 42mm, probably too small for your Zeiss.

Thanks for the suggestions. It's like 55mm outter diameter. There's a small lip and three lugs around the edge, which I guess held the orginal on. I guess I'll get an aftermarket one and make it work, as I hate shooting without one on my digital cams.

As for the eyepiece, I guess I'll try a camera store, to see if they have something from a still camera that will work.

Does anyone know of a good camera store in the Houston area that has lots of little spare parts for still cameras, or one that actually has Super8 stuff?

Thanks!

How bizarre! I have an S8 in pieces in front of me as I type this- I bought it on ebay for 1 euro! but it had badly corroded battery compartment so I needed to sort it out:

and I too need a lens hood!

Its known as a B56 fitting and is shared with quite a few Zeiss cameras- Contarex to name but one. I know they made 2 different versions for the S8 cameras- one for the GS8 which had a wider 6mm zoom, and one for the S8/ES8 (?) which had the 9-36mm zoom. Which is lucky for us as either of those would be safe, but I'm not sure about the ones from stills cameras- if you can find one for a wide angle it will probably be safe. Theres one on ebay.com at the moment but its a square format which isn't much good with the rotating focus barrel of the S8.

I was lucky to get the eyecup but I wouldn't let them stop you from using your camera.

Out of interest with all this notch business, this camera has an interesting notch/light meter setting system.
A lever in the film chamber is moved down the front of the cart as you close the door:

This is geared to drive a drum which has a varying diffusion pattern printed on it:

This filters the light going to the photo cell a varying amount depending on the length of the notch/film speed in an infinitely variable way! Neat!

Very nice simple camera by the way, and lovely quality lens.

:D Thanks Sparky! The "B56" type fitting saved the day!! Using that part number, I've already found a replacement hood at several placements after a search!!

Like you say, it's a simple camera with a nice piece of glass on the front of it, and I'd like to use it!
