Vintage movie camera display

Post by sooper8fan »

HI all,
As I've mentioned in a previous post, my wife has supported my Super8 habit ever since I showed her the results of some stop-motion footage she helped me with. She suggested I get a display case for the home and show off some vintage movie cameras and their original manuals. (bless her heart!)
So my question to all of you is, which cameras do YOU think would be appropriate for such a display?
From Rare to Popular, Single8, Double8, Super8, 9.5mm, 16mm....any ideas are welcome. The cameras will not be used, just displayed (although it would be cool to boast that they still work!). Thanks in advance for your ideas. The collecting starts soon!

I think there is much more variety of design in Regular 8mm cameras. Just look at an illustrated camera-collection book...you may agree. Most, though certainly not all, Super 8 cameras have a cookie-cutter look about them...again just my opinion...not talking quality, just design. :)

A Nikon R10 should be in a display case!

Which reminds - 6 months ago I saw this BEAUTIFUL wooden display case with fours shelves and glass covers at Urban Living - for $150. I have been thinking about it ever since :-D

The first camera I'd choose is the Beaulieu 4008... one of the most beautiful cameras ever made (not just movie cameras, either). I always liked the Bolex 155... interesting design.

Old wind-up cameras with 3 lens turrrets and cool optics.
Bolex 16mm with a turret looks cool. :) I have one. And a Kodak K100, a 6 lens turret, it is pretty cool too.

8mm much better cameras. look at the geva carena 8.

9.5mm - hard to find except for the pathe models, unless you live in england or france.

early 16mm can be expensive.

I originally posted this topic back in May to get some ideas for some collectable cameras. Well, I've picked up a few new ones and I'll probably be getting a couple more.

I recently picked up a Technicolor Mark Ten in mint condition for $6.95. I don't know if these are any good or not, but I like the unique look of the camera and thought it would look cool on display. It's very "Jetsons". Does anybody else have one of these? Used one of these?

I also just picked up (but have not received it yet) a Bolex 160 Macrozoom. It looks like something from Star Wars. Again, I don't know too much about this camera but it's in excellent condition and I like the unique look of the body. Any input?

I picked up a "brand new" mint condition Brownie just for kicks as well as a Bell & Howell Autoload 315 with pistol grip.

My wife's boss gave me a couple cameras. One is a Bell & Howell 200 EE that takes 16mm magazine loads. The other is a Canon Motorzoom8 EEE.

I doubt anybody cares but I just wanted to post. When I get a couple more I'm going to post some pics of the "family". Does anybody else have pictures of their collection? If so, I'd like to see them. Also, if anybody has any more suggestions as to cameras that have a unique or interesting look or features, do tell!! Thanks everybody.

I've had 2 or 3 of these, love the Atomic age design, gets conversations started when you use it in public. Hard to focus (aerial image) but quite reliable. My results had a nice home-movie look, somewhat soft around the edges and a fair amount of flare.

Interesting industrial design with a creative approach to packaging for balance and ergonomics, e.g. the gate is at right angles to the lens. Decent optics but in my experience they don't age well - more than half (of about 6) that I got on eBay had problems with the meter or the film drive.

For display, consider examples that show the diversity of the species - if you have a Canon 1218 next to an Agfa Microflex it's like an ostrich next to a hummingbird. The Canon 1218 has such a huge lens - probably still the record for ratio of glass-to-image-area. They even put a handle on the lens cap 8O

You might want to check out a Regular 8mm Bell & Howell 414PD, aka the Zapruder camera. They come fairly cheap on ebay and it would make a Kool conversation piece.

Get a B&H Filmo and an H8 or H16.

And shoot with that Canon Motorzoom 8 EEE if it works. I've been half-a** looking for one of those for a while...
