New processing for Kodachrome- E6 for B&W reversal of K4

Post by Chris-B »

Hello all,

I don't know if you read about my results processing K40 as black & white negative (it work anyway and it was very simple to do!), but I'm looking in to processing Kodachrome 40 as reversal.

I read somewhere (ages ago) that you can get B&W reversal from K40 using an E6 developing kit. Now this sounds great!!! From what I read you can get K40 to come out in this kit, it is just that you don't get any colour coming through on development.
I'm going to have a go anyway, but has any one go any tips on doing this? Any info anyone might have would be great!
Anyone know if something like Tri-X would work with E6 (it's just a thought)?

I'll try to get my adventures in K40 processing written up for this site as soon as I can, sorry it's taking a while.

Chris.

Why don't you try to develope K40 as b/w reversal, with the bleaching bath, re-exposure and second developer.
Btw, does anyone know about the re-exposure... for how long, how bright, what distanse?

i'm not sure, but shouldn't the re-exposure be "as long, as bright and as close as possible?" what you're trying to do with this step is to expose as many of the remaining crystals as possible.

Yesterday I developed a roll of K40 with D76 b/w developer. Off course it came out as a negativ. I think it looks quite beatiful, with the orange cast and all the things happening on the surface of the film. Some will think it looks very thrashy and yes it really does! I used a regular phototank with 4 reel capacity and the temperature were 22,5 Celcius. The film was exposed normally and the times I used were 7 min with the first developer and 5 min with fix. Yes I jumped the stop bath. 7 min first developing were a little short I think. The next time I will also try over-exposing when filming. Mayby with some mixing and trixing one could process just one of the color layers? I have a few jitter catriges left and I use these to experiment with. I will keep you informed. And Chris have you tried the E6 kit on K40 yet?

Hi there,
No, I haven't tried the E6 process on K40 yet.

But what I have been doing is looking into a reversal process for K40. I assumed that the E6 kit would only bring K40 out as black and white reversal anyway.
So what I've done is bought myself a reversal kit from the Widescreen Centre in London (costing £12.95 -about $18.90).
The kit is designed for using with the G3 tank on Tri-X or Plus-X film but I only use a tank like yours, a 4 film 35mm stills tank.

I'm going to try to adjust the times for K40 on the stills tank. I will do this next week some time and post my results.
From what I've looked into I should be able to get rid of the orange colour in the reversal process. I believe that the orange/yellow tone can still be achieved in the reversal process by simply by using the developer on the film for a third time.

I'll post my results as soon as I have them,
Chris.

PS. When developing K40 as black and white negative I used Ilford ID11 the timings used for ID11 and D76 are about the same. When I filmed 2stops over I developed with ID11 at a temperature of 20c for 5mins and stoped for 2mins and then fixed in Ilford rapid fix for only 4mins. I found that when I fixed for longer than this the film started to get very overly orange/dark brown.
So you skipped the stop and went straight to the fix? I might try that, was there a specific reason why you do this?
