TOO EXPENSIVE MAGAZINE!

Post by PITIRRE »

Hi:

I was interesting in the small format magazine and I still think is a good idea but it is too expensive for me ($79.00 a year) I know that the magazine came from Germany and the shipping would cost more than magazines printed in the U.S, I hope that somebody published a super 8 magazine that cost less from people from this part of the world.

Let me made this clear I know that business is to make money and I'm pretty sure that the Small Format magazine is really good, but until there is another choice of information this forum and other sites would be my first source of update news and information. Best wishes to Small Format

I think $80/year is reasonable for a magazine catering to a very small and specific audience like us. Especially since it has to be shipped internationally. Juergen doesn't have the benefit of huge advertising revenue - there are precious few manufacturers left, as Kodak has highlighted this week.

I ordered a copy this morning.

You should not subscribe now but just pay $ 10 for the first issue. Then you may make up your mind if its worth $ 79. Just see these arguments:

- shipping from Europe around the world; high shipping rates
- small number of sold copies
- color printing
- nearly no ads
- translation of manuscripts from all over the world

I hope the price is reansonable. Just try the first issue: http://www.smallformat.de - and make up your mind.

The cover looks really good. By the looks of the cover, I get the impression that the articles inside are in English? Also how many pages are in a typical issue of SmallFormat? Is this a brand new magazine or has it been around for a few years? I'm excited to see a magazine like this and will most likely be making a purchase. Thanks Juergen!

Hello, Juergen-- Have you considered offering a downloadable PDF format? It could be offered at a cheaper price than the printed version for those people who are leery of the subscription rate and shipping. To retain the value of the printed magazine, the PDF could be made lo-res just for screen viewing. It would offer an option to those wishing immediate gratification, and I think would boost your business. Or, another idea--offer the PDF version a month late as a means of residual income (like selling "back issues"). Good luck with the magazine!

I agree with the idea of making the magazine available online as a PDF. that could lower the price for us, increase sales for you, AND save paper all at the same time! :)

The problem I can see with this is it is so portable, anyone can pass a copy to another without having to pay for it. If they uploaded it to edonkey, then everything will be over. There has to be a digital protection or some robust digital rights management built into it.

I personally like it in printed form. That way I can read it even while I am on the toilet.

PayPal order coming...

Or maybe not buy it, regret it, and in 5 years time buy it for double the price on ebay.

Very true. Of course anything can be cracked and passwords can be shared, but the Professional version of Adobe Acrobat allows you to set security ("permissions") on a PDF. You can create a "Document Open" password to open the file, and then create another password for printing permissions. Printing can be allowed as None, Lo-Res (150 dpi), or High-Res.
Another cool thing about PDFs is that you can create clickable hyperlinks!

I ordered the first issue and hopefully the issue pictured will be the one sent. I can't wait to read about the 360 Panorama. I wonder if another picture shows 16 Elmo GS1200 set up for the syncronised projection WOW! Oh by the way I bet he as everyone of the those cameras loaded with Kodachrome! You remember Kodachrome don't you? I heard it was pretty Good.

Of course - the articles will be in English. "schmalfilm" is published in Germany for 57 years now. There will be the best articles from the last two years in translation and there will be a lot of new, never published articles from authors around the world (Japan, USA, England, Norway, France, etc.). The magazine has 72 pages.

There will NOT be a pdf version. This is a magazine to READ. You wont do that at the pc and if you print it it will be mainly black and white. That is not our aim.

Within the next days, you may even see some sampe articles at http://www.smallformat.de
