Bad NEW K40 Cartridges - Online Cartridge Number Database?

Post by S8 Booster »

Basically a question for Andreas because I do not know if it is too much to ask for but I think it is alarming with all these reports about jittery NEW cartridges so I just wonder if it is possible to establish some sort of online database at this site allowing Cartridge Numbering and dates, where is is bought etc to fill inn to see if it is a pattern in this?

Brief example. The GOOD cartridges should also be filled in.

Data input:
Cartridge jitter: GOOD / NO GOOD
Abnormal Noise when filming?
Cartridge serial numbers
Date of expiry
Where they were purchased / From whom
When they were purchased
+++++ suggestions
Auto sort database after serial numbers as they entred.

Just curios to see if there is some consistency in this and if it is we may use this DB to adress this problem to Kodak officials if required.

What do you think?

Very cool idea Vidar.

This continuing jitter problem is undermining confidence in Super8. I am a dedicated Super8er, and I've never had a jittery cart yet, but I never bought a cart with the replaced disc as I had loads of older stock. My new batch seems like it is going to give me serious problems judging by the test reel, and that is unacceptable on a serious project. You MUST go into a film project with faith that your footage will be useable, or else what's the point?

Hey,
Even though there are new reports concerning the jitter problem, why don't go for the ultimate solution? It will make your cameras and sharpness better and it will always make sure the film is transported perfectly through the gate. What am I talking about? The "Frame Master" ofcourse! :-)

I've seen the commercial (video) for it and the results look awesome!!!

Andreas,
the jittery problem seems to arise out of excess friction in the cart's mechanism: I disassembled both a faulty cartridge and a new one(supposedly jitter-free cartridge - in fact the result had been prfect with the latter): they just differ from each other for the plastic dish film tray on which the unexposed roll is wound. As for the rest they are exactly the same. My point is the new jitter-free cartridge's disc is much softer and thinner than the previous ones'. So by adding the "frame master" i suppose friction would be increased rather than diminished, with no improvement at all. The frame master was originally developed for non K40 emulsions (both reversal and neg) because they are thinner and tend to breathe as little as necessary to have the image not ever in focus as it should be. In other words the frame master helps for definition problems with those emulsions and not with the jittery problem on the K40 which all cameras were originally developed to work with.

One suggestions for the poll: state what camera the cartridge hs been shot on.

My tuppence.

Maurizio

Probably a good idea, but there are many factors one should take into consideration before trusting a database like that. What I mean is all numbers are collected from users whom may not know exactly what they're talking about and may enter data based on assumptions. This could make the whole thing useless in my eyes. Still, I like the idea!

By the way, I don't know how to program a database ... :(

There is no such database yet but could be developed later with info supplied from (many) users of this site.

The only two parameters needed to "record" sufficiently reliable data to sort out good or bad batches are confirmed jitter and batch/production numbers.

It will be fault tolerant enough to sort out the bad batches if the amount of data input is sufficient.

The other datas may be for reference only but could be useable as secondary information for new evaluations with a different angle.

Technically I do have the tools to create a WEB database but not the time to make it at least not for the time being. I´ll keep it hovering though.

On the other hand some sort of XL "database" would be sufficient if it could be WEB operated.
