stuff on 85b filter?

Post by CleanCut »

Hey guys, I just got a new (unused, the box looks old) Tiffen 85b filter...But its got a bunch of weird stuff on it? looks like a bunch of cracks in the coating or something (does this filter have a coating?)...so is this a problem or just normal for an 85b filter?

sorry..that is not super 8 ^^ :(. Yes I have crossed over to the dark side but it was logical for my money situation. Thanks for the help,

I don't know if your Tiffen is a coated filter or not. Most Tiffen are not, so I doubt it. But in any case, the cracks are not normal.

Some cheap filters have a gelatin layer sandwiched between two layers of glass. These might develop wrinkles in the gelatin layer. Better filtes are colored glass. That's what most Tiffen are. Even better ones are colored glass with single or multi-coatings.

Here is some brief info about filter construction.
