SUPER 8 ONNATURAL BORN KILLERS

Post by DIEFTHINTIS »

Recently I had the chance to attend the Oliver Stone movie, Natural Born Killers, in which, according to the PRO8mm site, Super 8 mm footage was used. Played through my DVD on a 32'' wide TV, there were too many shots (mostly on B&W), where the grain was... more than obvious, though the picture looked sharp. On the ather hand, there were just a few (color and B&W) shots which - even on the TV srceen, looked blurred (but no much grainier). Does anybody if the grainy (still sharp...) b&W part of the film, was shot on super 8, or a very - very sensitive 16 mm film?

ACTUALLY ITS A GREAT FILM.

AND IF YOU HAVE THE DVD LISTEN TO OLIVERS STONES COMMENTRY. HE TELLS YOU MOST OF THE DIFFERENT FILM FORMATS. I THOUGHT THE 8MM LOOKED COOLER THAN... SOMETHING REALLY COOL

It feels strange being in this position, normally being a big American antagonist, but I have to say that American cinema isn't crap at all! A lot is, of course, but most cinema generally is mediocre or worse. It's no crapper than French cinema, or Spanish Cinema. If you really believe that, you really have a lot of wonderful films to discover. :D The big box office stuff is often shite, but there are some real gems, and to fail to acknowledge that is just ignorant.

I have to say here, that the reason British films are so rubbish, is that anyone with any talent over here goes to America to realise their film dreams for 5 times the money. I should also add that I believe the best American films tend to have a large involvement of British and European cast and crew, especially the directors. Clever directors take Hollywood money out of Hollywood to make their films, IMHO.

I don't think so.
Fernando: Have you seen American Independent Cinema?
There's many good independent filmmakers in the U.S.
Perhaps you refer to the "Hollywood Comercial Propaganda Machine Crap". In this case I agree with you.

most of the black and white footage on NBK was on a 16mm camera. there is alot of color shot in super 8. no 16mm color though. there is a little super black and white, but only little clips mostly.

I thought so, because of the sharpness of the picture. Also there are too many steadicam shots, which I think could not be made with s8. Anybody tried to balance a super 8 camera on a steadicam jr? Anyway, why in most of the s8 cameras the tripod hole seems to be so off-balanced?

I remember seeing a still from an article on the movie. It showed Robert Rodriguez shooting with a Beaulieu 7008 pro out in the desert. I haven't seen the film recently but I believe this is during the part that they start feeling the paode (spelling) start kicking in.

I have heard of people using super8 cameras with steadycam JR clones, the main thing you need to really do it well is a video tap for the camera.

I seem to remember reading that it was indeed a 7008 Pro that was used for NBK, so Supereight is right about that much, form what I remember.

I pretty sure it was oliver stone himself that did most of the super 8 cinematography. theres a picture i saw online of him filming it in the desert. but i couldnt tell what camera he was using, but it was super 8.

In the bottom left paragraph of that article, it claims that Kodachrome is C41 processing? If that were true, we'd get it processed on any street corner, no?

C-41, isn´t that the "standard" for older Kodak photo neg films?

Journalist MIX?
