cinema sync systems
I bought a sync cassette recorder. It has a number of functions on it. It was distributed by cinema sync systems in the 1970s or 80s. I cant find information on the correct operation of this unit. Anybody know where I can find a manual for this? ANybody eer heard of cinema sync systems?

Cannot offer any comfort on manuals etc,but take a look at the sync input port and see if you can get a plug-in to it.Then you will have to have a camera that (or projector) that will also deliver a sync-pulse.Again a suitable plug will be needed for the feeder applications, mate them together and see if you get any joy.

It must have plugs with some names on them - like: Digital, Pilotone? Crystal (if you are lucky)? Can you look and tell us about any names of ports on it? Does it have a Sync meter by any chance?mike wrote:I bought a sync cassette recorder. It has a number of functions on it. It was distributed by cinema sync systems in the 1970s or 80s. I believe the whole thing lies with the 5 pin din sync. I am at work now. when I go home this evening I'll write more on this - I just have to check the din pin sync assignments of the Sony Super8 sound recorder at home. Then I'll post the different pin assignments on my recorder. They may as well be the same on your recorder.mike wrote:It has a 5 pin din sync, stereo rca line in/out, input select of mic/din - att(?) - and line. l/r mic inputs. It also has some sort of sync meter. I have not idea if its cyrstal sync or not.
The Super8 Sound modified Sony recorder has a 5-pin DIN. facing the pins in an inverted U configuration and starting from Left to Right:mike wrote:It has a 5 pin din sync, stereo rca line in/out, input select of mic/din - att(?) - and line. l/r mic inputs. Pin 1: High Level Sync Input
Pin 4 (yes, next to Pin 1 is Pin 4): Low Level Sync Input
Pin 2: Ground
Pin 5: Pilotone Sync Output (When recorder switched to Line and plugged into AC outlet)
Pin 3: 1/F Switch Input (When recorder switched to DIGITAL)
Of course I do not know if these map correctly to your recorder. But of notice is Pin 5 (along with ground at Pin 2). You can connect this to the camera Flash Socket. The outputs act as resolvers. You can experiment with your camera and the 5-pin assignments to find out where the 1/F input on the recorder (if it si not pin 3)
CORRECTION

thanks.
None of my cameras have a flash socket. But I have a sync pulse generator for a beaulieu what has a cord with two inner lines (the end is missing) and an arriflex m which is capable of sending sync. thanks of the info! The recorder was only $30 off ebay. cheap, compaired to a mini disk or a sony pro or a uher report monitor.

In this case, you can get a cable and try connecting the camera to the recorder. See if these cameras will send a pilotone signal to pin 3 on the recorder.mike wrote:thanks.

Re: cinema sync systems
Hello Mike,
Was reading your post with much interest. I have this same recorder I bought on ebay. All the basic tape recorder functions work fine but I have no idea how to use it in sync mode and have been totally unable to find any info on it anywhere online. Its model CSS-1 by cinema sync systems (they went out of business in 88) its based on a JVC unit.
It has the din plug on the side as you describe, which has got to be the plug for pilotone sync. WHAT I WOULDN'T GIVE FOR AN INSTRUCTION MANUAL FOR THIS UNIT !! LoL
Have you ever had any luck connecting this recorder and figured out the pinout for the din plug ? Any advice at all you could give me here would really be greatly appreciated. Thank you !!! Doug

Re: cinema sync systems
That might have been my post long before one had to login on the 8mm filmshooting board. The unit has been sitting in storage and I haven't really been shooting sync sound. I did buy a resolver unit made by the original super 8 sound but haven't done anything with it.

Re: cinema sync systems
Thanks for letting me know. Ill just have to go through the advice people gave you on this thread and see if I can make any sense out of it.
Id really like to get this machine working it seems like a pretty high quality unit.
I need to figure which pins are inputs and which are outputs on this DIN plug. It says "internal resolver" on the top. Im not positive what that means. But im hoping I can plug a 1/f switch output from my projector into one of the pins and have it play the sound in sync with the film.
