spiral tanks, where to find them besides ebay???

Post by chachi »

I posted in the buy sell forum, but I doubt I will get many responses from people looking to sell their own tanks.

I'm basically looking for the double tray LOMO or super8 superior bulk tank or possibly any others..

So, does anyone know of any web sites that sell these???
Perhaps you know of a particular seller you've dealt with who has access to these tanks? any help would be appreciated..

thanks in advance..

Olexandr Kalynychenko from Ukraine sells them, but recently he told me he was out of the two roll 50 foot tanks (what he calls the S8/16x50, formerly designated UPB-1 and UPB-1A). Perhaps he has more now.

Olex is well known and reliable. I've bought two cameras and two tanks from him.

The main page is Russian cine and photo cameras. The page with the S8/16x50 tank is Universal Cine Film Processing Tanks.

Thanks monobath, I sent him an eamil.

Hopefully he has what I'm looking for.

lomo

Olex told me the same several months ago and said he didn't know when he would be getting more.

I bought mine from Action Camera in San Francisco (http://www.actioncamerasf.com), paid a bunch ($200) and got the last one they had. But they may have more now...

These things are like gold, but rarer.

Anybody know of a source for an extra spiral reel sans tank?

I wish I could get a spare set of spirals, too. I never thought to ask Olex about that, though.

I think all of these Lomo tanks are old and possibly used stock, and that they are no longer produced. Even if the molds, dies, and tooling were still available to make them again, I doubt it would be economically feasible to do so. Not even in China. There's simply very little demand for them.

Bristol Cine Sales, UK sold me one and said he had another. Try them.

The Russian spiral tanks might not be that uncommon. I bought a Russian S8 tank (not actually a LOMO but very similar) on eBay for GBP £40 earlier this year, which I thought was about as much as I'd want to pay for such an item. There were three up for auction at that time and they all fetched around that amount (I checked).

Mine came with the original instructions and box, all in RUssian, plus the sales sheet from the place where it was bought, in North London, mid-1960s. I'd guess that these things were fairly easily available from a photo shop back then. Keep your eyes peeled, and I reckon you'll get hold of one.

As for getting the tanks commercially remade these days then I'd say that would be very unlikely. The volume of sales just wouldn't justify it.

later. phil

I asked Olex for an extra set of spirals a couple of years ago and he said he could only sell the complete tank.

I haven't dealt with him for a while but I can backup what others say about him being 100% trustworthy.

I'm actually in talks with a member of this forum who contacted me about selling his new tank for 90 euros plus shipping. He tells me he originally bought 2 and that this one is brand new and has never been used.

*update*

I was contacted today and have purchased the tank ... I can't wait to get it so I can try my hand at developing super8 film aswell.
