S8 processing and shooting questions...

Post by Evan Kubota »

I've done a search but couldn't find answers to these specific questions.

This might be incredibly stupid, but can you swap a reel when it has been partially used? I have 2 cameras coming in the mail and I want to test both before I do any real projects with them, but I don't want to use a reel for each. Can I shoot half on the Canon, then put the cart in the Bolex and finish the reel? I guess it depends on whether the film stays in the cart or is threaded into the mechanism. The frame counter will probably be off, but no big deal - this would just be testing to make sure the image is passable.

Second question - with the (Dwayne's) processing through Wal-Mart, will there be leader attached to the film upon its return? If not, where can I buy some, and is it absolutely necessary?

Yes, you can change the cart part way through. You'll lose the few frames that are visible in the pressure plate area due to overexposure, so after your last take, cap the lens and run it a couple seconds more before opening the door. And yes, it'll reset the film counter on most cameras when you open the door.

Yes, you need leader if you are going to project the film or telecine it. Yes it comes back with leader on it. You don't have to buy it and affix it yourself, but if you are projecting the film, you might want to extend it. I have no experience with Dwayne's via Wal-Mart, but Kodak gives you barelysufficient leader to thread the projector with.

Well, leader isn't strictly necessary, but without it, you'll always miss the first several seconds of the film when projecting and run the risk of chewing it up irretrievably. Dwayne's does attach leader. When prepping for telecine (a free service they offer), they attach a large amount to both ends.
