New trailer for "The Light of Eons"

Hey there. Just wanted to let folks know I put up a quicktime trailer for "The Light of Eons," my short film I shot on Super-8 and finished on HD24p. It won BEST SHORT at the Westchester (NY) Film Festival in March, and plays in two festivals in April. I'll try to keep everyone posted on any more screenings.

that looks really good. i never quite understood those tiny frame sizes though. how about a bigger version?

The bigger it gets, the more space it takes up on a server, and the longer to upload and download, so you have to sort of find the best comprimise. I found this size to be manageable without pixilating the image too much.

I hope as time goes by I'll be able to screen it everywhere I can so people can see it in all it's small gauge glory!

i prefer higher compression to smaller frames. you can't really get a feel for a film unless you view it at an ok size, and that causes much more pixelation than compression. if you do it correctly you can use pretty large frame sizes and still get managable file sizes. the 30 second "jag bara undrar" trailer on my site (http://www.mattias.nu/jagbaraundrar/) is around 2 megs at 512x288 and it has very few artifacts.

oh, now i noticed that it's actually much bigger than what shows on the site. 320x240 is more than ok but you're scaling it down on the page. just change "width=240 height=196" to "width=320 height=240" and people will see the full clip instead of a scaled down version.

That was really good! Looked like 35mm. Amazing DOF in the close-up subway scene. Looks really professional.

Would be greatful if you could answer a few questions:
- What camera(s) did you use to shoot the film?
- What film stock?
- How was the telecine performed?

It looks like a beautiful film. Would love to see all of it

Sufian,

Let's see.. I used a Nizo for most shooting, including the time lapse, and a Eumig for the lower light situations, like in the subway and such.

I shot primarily on Tri-x, but a few time lapse shots were done with plus-x.

I did the telecine at Technicolor in New York, and I was lucky to have the chance to do it on the Spirit telecine, which goes to HD.

A question for you (or anyone else who knows): What is "DOF?"

I saw your film, by the way -- nice job as well!

I don't know if I replied to your other thread. Anyway, nice work. This reminds me somewhat of "Pi" - another no-effects sci-fi flick. I like that subgenre a lot, and at some point I intend to do a short film in a similar style.

david, the trailer is still playing in a tiny window on your website. i don't know if you understood what i was saying: there's nothing wrong with the size of your clip, it's the web site that shows the clip in a tiny frame.

Hi David,

Congratulations on winning the festival! I have to say your cinematography is very impressive. Good job!

I my self am shooting a short film with Tri X soon and wondered if you used any filters or anything to improve the contrast? I would be more than
happy if mine turns out to have black and white like that.

Hmmm maybe im just underestimating what Tri X can do . . . but i have seen some quite poor black and white done with this stock in the past.

The trailer sure looks promising! I would prefer to see it in a larger frame size though.

Everything looks really nice in black and white. IÃ¢â‚¬â„¢m gone have to try out some tri-x or plus-x anytime soon, having only used K40 so far.

it *is* in a larger frame size (320x240). if you have quicktime pro you can use the save as function in the plugin and open it in quicktime player, and otherwise you can click this link (david, if you don't want the link published let me know and i'll remove it).

What flavor of HD24P did you use 720 or 1080? Did you have the film transferred professionally or did you use a home built scanner of your own design? I have 2 home built film scanners that I made 2 years ago. One can do 1280 X 1024 and the other does 800 X 600. I often wonder why no one had done Hidef super-8 before, now you have proven it is viable. Your footage looks great!!! I see you will be showing in Houston May, 22 which is my birthday

I sure hope I get a chance to go.
