Isolating Colors

Does anyone know how to isolate an object in color while the rest of the shot is in black and white? I know you can do this in FCP but how? The only thing I know is that the shot has to be orginally in color. Any help would be appreciated.

three way color corrector -> limit effect -> select the color you want to keep -> invert selection -> desaturate -> voila!

for more control and probably cleaner results you can use the color key filter along with a garbage matte to select what you want to keep, then add it on top of a copy of the same clip in b&w. this way you can easily color correct and add other filters to the two layers independently. oh, and the best filter for making an image black and white is of course mine. download it from my homepage below.

How did they get that shot at the beginning of Sin City, where everything is B&W except the girl's dress. My own thought is chroma key where the only thing in the shot that is red is the girl's dress. Use make-up to keep skin from triggering the chroma key. Done in video of course.

Have you ever had this effect made during xfer? It seems like that would be the way to go... I wouldn't know, since I haven't tried it. I'm considering using this method in a short I'm planning. (black and white with color objects)

That seems like an odd way of doing it, since the girl was fairly static. If I were doing that shot, I'd just make garbage mattes as necessary. Totally eliminating red from the frame would be pretty difficult, especially considering the reflected light from the dress.

If you look at it closely, the red appears highly processed - maybe the sampling artifacts are just more visible with the saturated color, but it's definitely not the original color.
