Where do I find equipment transfering Super8/8mm

Post by lewiswf »

I would like to find some equipment so that I can transfer 8mm/Super 8 over to either DVD or VHS. Does anyone know of manufactures of such equipment?

Thanks,

A camcorder with a 1/50 second shutter and a projector will do a basic job.
Project picture no bigger than 10 x 8. Have camcorder and projector bot at an angle to the screen, only a few degress, but as they are opposite it cancels out. But the angles seems to get rid of direct bulb glare from the screen. Record directly into the computer and edit from there.

Thats my way and the VCDs paly fine on the DVD player.

There are better ways, but they are all more expensive.

The 1/50 shutter is important as this seems to ensure little or no flicker, but is not an absolute. So I would try this with existing, or borrowed kit before splashing out. I just have a decent Canon Hi-8 and PII 355 MHz computer so doubt that I could do much better with a higher spec. camcorder.

 oops!

I think you might be right. I was never very good at optics at school.

Anyhow, so long as the angle is narrow it makes no noticieable diiference and seems to eliminate the bulb light problem.

I'm no expert either, but I would also have thought in theory that if the projector was pointing at an angle from one side of the screen, and the camera the same angle from the other side, this would cancel out the distortion. Why doesn't that work then? Just curious.

well, the projection will be bigger on the side closer to the camera since it's fuirther away from the projector, and it will look even bigger since it's closer to the camera. imagine such a setup with a large angle and it will become obvious... :-)

Yes, but won't the projected picture be equally 'smaller' on the side of the camera because it's further away from the projector. Therefore canceling out the difference?

That was me.

Oh no, hang on a minute, the picture is larger as it gets further from the projector. My brain was thinking it would be smaller because it's further away. How silly of me! Thanks for clearing that up. I think...
