The first issue of Make Magazine (O'Reilly) has a article called "The $14.00 Video Camera Stabilizer". While not a crane, it is a nice home built "steadycam" for your movie camera. Very heavy duty. You can find Make Magazine here:

When I found it a year or so ago, he had some nice demo footage shot with a Handicam.
EVEN CHEAPER: For those who own a monopod, you can build a very similar device just by adding a weight to the bottom of the monopod and not extending it - make sure the bottom weight is just slightly more than the top (keep the weights as similar as possible to avoid it swinging as you move).
