Come on you young filmers, give us a clue! :(
a bostbank account is the equivalent of a basic post office bank account like girobank or alliance & leicester account. i can't remember the exact details but this used to mean that transferring funds was cheaper from a uk post office type account to a european postbank account. (i got charged about £5 3-4 years ago) i seem to remember that it may now be free to transfer.....
will check my facts, can't rely on my memory anymore :)

from http://www.super8.nl/english/e_price_home.htm
IMPORTANT NEWS: International bankpayments are cheap/free of charge within the European Monetary Union. If you live in Belgium, Denmark, Deutschland, Finland, France, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Austria, Portugal, Spain, United Kingdom and Sweden you can use a 'basic bank payment' that is free of charge! Ask you local bank for details! This will save you up to €10,00 ! Always mention the BIC and IBAN code when you make a payment. Make sure you use my personal name for your payments, so use F.W.J. Bruinsma.
So that would suggest it is indeed free to transfer as long as you have a suitable account... I have an alliance & leicester current account & if you ring them up / use the online banking, you can find out your own BIC / IBAN codes.

Not if you use a high street consumer bank, or other "currency exchange traders".... The cheapest I found £14 for two week transfer, £20 for one week transfer. That's after three formal queries with the retail branch staff, who needed some time to sort out the details and paperwork. The amount of paper work and fine print, takes about twenty minutes to read, more if you actually try to understand the legalese.

The Post Office advertised a currency banking service, but only if you used their high street bank.

I order some films from Wittner now and then, and here in Finland it is very easy. I just look the goods I need, send them the list and wait a couple of days.
Then when they send me the bill via email, I just send the money using my own computer and Internet. I have "keys" to my bank and to my account and I can send money directly from my account to their´s, from my own home! To Germany it is free.

High street banks can transfer money to other EU banks much cheaper than £14.

as I said before, it is peculiarly expensive to send money to the USA because their banks are in the stone age and not part of the international banks clearing system. But I can do it from a Lloyds-TSB account to a Washington Mutual account (both in my name) for £14 a pop. Takes about 7 days for the money to arrive. I've been doing this regularly for the last 5+ years.

Within the EU it is cheaper and in some cases free. If your bank gives you other information then they are just wrong, try asking a different bank employee.

Hi
I have also just placed an order and was intending to send some euro notes by insured mail. But CC is better. Do they have a secure web page or do they want you to phone your details across?

cheers

The best place to buy Standard 8 film is direct from John Schwind. http://members.aol.com/Super8mm/JohnSchwind.html He has a larger choice of stocks than the Widescreen Centre and his prices are a fraction of theirs (Compare his $9.00 (about £5.00) for 7240 with the Widescreen Centre's £14.25) . Postage is negligible for a reasonable order (Six Standard 8 rolls to the UK cost me $10 by Priority Airmail a couple of weeks ago). Payment is by Paypal.

Thats an interesting site. I wonder why he calls Kodachrome- Cinechrome, or is that what its called nowadays?
I see the 100ft spools he sells come on a 16mm spool which needs an adator. Surely if the film is intended to be used in an 8mm camera it would be on a spool suitable for that camera? Or have I missed something there?

cheers

It is Kodachrome, but I believe only products made by Kodak can be called that. His film is from Kodak, but he cuts it and packages it himself (I gather, I don't know--maybe Kodak cuts it, but he definitely packages it), so it isn't a Kodak product and can't be called Kodachrome.

100' 16mm spools are probably much easier to come by than 8mm ones as few 8mm cameras could take the larger spools. Since unprocessed 8mm and 16mm are the same width, and 16mm spools are in abundance, I would say that's the reason it comes on them. He at one point sold an adapter, but for the last year or more, he seems to be out of stock (at least every time I've looked). You could probably rig something up on your own, or just let the spool spin around all wobbly.

..or go to a different bank. This article explains why we pay so much in the UK, and also why its different in Sweden:http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/programmes/m ... 279801.stm

My bank (Abbey) charges £20 something, or at least did the last time I asked, but it looks like some are chaeper than that, but I don't know if any are free. I guess I'll have to look around and find if there is one that will do it free, because for me that would be a very good reason to move my account.

Cool, interesting. So that´s the reason to the cheap transfers from Sweden. :)

As far as I am aware, one just orders on their online order form, then they bill you,and you then send them details.
The only concern there is that it is not a secure website so the jury is still out for me.

Rob, - and anyone else interested,

Sorry for the delay, but I have been away on business over the Easter - YES, business - I'll have my holiday in a week or two's time!

Yes, I send my films back to John Schwind in the USA for processing.

GET THIS - $10 (that's a fiver in £) for all standard 8 and super 8, whether it be colour, B&W, sound or silent.

However, I still have some Ektachrome 160 super 8 sound, which can also be processed for $10, but John recommends the high quality processing for this film at $25, which I use, as I reckon it's worth it.

Now, even with return postage to the UK, there is still no comparison.

I rest my case!

Best to all,

Dave.
