Pro 8mm Max 8
"MAX-8 will use a frame that is 1.58 (1 inch high by 1.58 inches wide), whereas traditional Super8 or Pro8mm film stocks use a frame of film that is 1.33 (1 inch high by 1.33 wide.)"
Wow! They're REALLY getting a lot out of that 8mm of film.

I dont understand inches can someone help me out. Have they filed the gate too? and widened the viewfinder masked it to make framing easier.

1" x 1.58"!? What an amazing innovation, an image area wider than the film itself!
They might want to fire their press release proofreader.

Sigh. Their staff doesn't understand aspect ratios, and their press release makes it sound like they created the new "format."
FYI, I contacted them and they quoted a price of $500-600 plus parts to convert a 4008 to widescreen. Quite a bargain, when you consider that my camera cost half that. :?

Re: Pro 8mm Max 8
Their plan is to make million$ on the film cement you'll need to glue five rolls of S8 film together so you can run it though this monster.kentbulza wrote:Wow! They're REALLY getting a lot out of that 8mm of film.

From the press release, it doesn't really say if they are going to widen the gate or just add 16:9 marker in the viewfinder. If it is the latter, then it is an expensive conversion.reflex wrote:FYI, I contacted them and they quoted a price of $500-600 plus parts to convert a 4008 to widescreen. Here's part of the press release:
I am not clear if it refers to the gate or just the viewfinder? The new expanded frame gives a 20% increase in usable picture when framing for HD. The viewfinder on the camera has the 16 x 9 frame marked for better framing during production.
If it is the gate, it is very well worth it because it is a major conversion - widening the gate, recentering the lens. and increasing the width of the guillotine mirror.
Hmmm.

duh, seems to me that you get a cute 16:9 frameline in the viewfinder for your $500. If you like that, I can do this for $50 and still feel guilty for ripping you off, but if you want to save $450 then just send in your cameras
I really really doubt that the gate is modified in any way. The beaulieu 4008 shutter is not modification-friendly to say the least.

have fun!
They make it pretty clear they've enlarged the gate of the camera:
The custom modification expands the frame size on the super 8 master,
and
In the MAX-8 format more of the film frame is being used as it passes through the camera gate.

I know nothing about what would be involved with a Beaulieu, but these guys claim they've done it and it's up for sale.
April Fools isn't for a couple of weeks, so...they must be serious.

Yeah, it sounds like Super Duper 8 given a new name and explained badly. For that money hopefully they're recentreing the lens and viewfinder as well as just filing the gate...

It is very clear that they are talking about an expanded frame --> modified gate. Is the lens re-centered? Not sure!LastQuark wrote:

Can someone explain to me why they even use Pro8mm?
They have such a bad reputation I’m surprised their still in business. Yet people still use them and then complain about the poor service, high prices and sloppy work they do. I haven’t heard or seen anything good from them. So why use them?
