Super 8 in Australia...

Post by Shion »

Hi all,

I've just purchased a Canon 514XL-S from E-Bay, and am eagerly waiting for it to arrive. A year ago I posted this thread asking about places here in Australia to buy and process film.

Has anything really changed since then? I'm particularly interested in knowing whether or not K40 film purchased here still includes free processing, and Oz people's opinions/experiences with telecine companies (both local and overseas).

Cheers,

-Bon

As far as I know, no film type of any kind has ever come with free processing. However, Kodachrome 40 is process-paid when you buy it. A shop in Adelaide recently informed me that Kodak no longer distributes the film to Australia...now the local distribution is handled by another company and as a result, some shops are having trouble getting hold of this film, trying to arrange a suitable deal with the new company. So there may be fewer shops who stock K40 nowadays.

I can't comment on telecine companies as I havent had many of my films transferred. However, I do know that from my brief experience of having some footage telecined, the quality of transfers can vary considerably from business to business.

Super 8 in Australia

Hi!

You can still buy K40 in Australia quite easily. The easiest way to buy it, is to call Kodak in Melbourne on 1300 139 795 and order it over the phone. They usually ship it to me overnight to Brisbane - free postage!

It currently costs $110 for 5 cartridges of K40 (you have to buy 5 minimum).

Processing is still included - but you have to wait a few weeks for it to return from Switzerland.

As far as Telecine goes, I think it's still the same old Film Plus and DVD Infinity. I'm thinking of sending my next telecine job to Flying Spot in the US - Most of the guys on this forum think they do a good job.

Kodak Australia can also get some negative stock (Vision2 200T or 500T), but the minimum order is 20 rolls @ around $27.50 each (not including processing). Anyone wanna goes halves in an order??

Thanks.

Mark.

Thanks for the replies.

Sorry, I did mean "processing-paid," not "free processing." :) Do you guys generally send it directly to Switzerland, or to a local Kodak office?

As for the Vision2 stock... I'd love to try some out, but couldn't justify buying 10 rolls just yet (me being so new to Super 8, and film in general). However, I'd be willing to buy 2 at that price. Maybe we could organise a "group buy," if that sort of thing is allowed on these forums? Surely others would be interested...

Cheers,

Welcome to the best Super 8 forum, Shion.

My experiences with Super 8 in Australia have been a bit frustrating (thank F*** for ebay and this forum!) We can only get K40 here in Adelaide, filter supplies are very limited (even for 35mm still photography), and everyone I speak to thinks I'm crazy!

Process paid K40's still available so far, and the Aust. PO Box listed on the pack is still valid. They take responsibility for shipping it to Switzerland and back; this can take 4-6 weeks or more.

Tri X (black and white) is also available, but you need to order it from a civilized city like Perth or Melbourne, and send it to Melb. for processing. Unless you send it to Melb during the Xmas rush, it's quicker than the K40. But that's about $17-18 on top of the $25 for the film, so it's more expensive.

There's NO Plus X  and Ektachrome has been killed worldwide  so our Super 8 options are limited. But none of that deters the diehards (like me).

Hey guys I reckon a group order on the vision 2 stuff would be great - I'd be in that - and might know one or two other people who might be too - perhaps we could set something up for this

-- btw I got In My Image telecined at Video 8 in Aartarmon in Sydney - around $250 per operator hour a few years back

-- any ideas on organising the vision 2 -- who wants to be in charge? - we have to get 20 rolls sold -- I'd rather try the 500 T I think.

Let's talk on this :-)

We've got a few Antipodean companies (and individuals) listed on http://www.onsuper8.org but have also found difficulty locating down under Super8ers.

Have a look and any suggestions would be most greatfully appreciated!

Vision2 Order

Post by markfroble »

Hey Guys,

I don't mind organising an order of Vision2 cartridges.

Before we make anything official, could anyone in Australia who's seriously interested, please list what they'd like to purchase??

I'll start:

If we make an order, I would like 10 x 500T cartridges.

I've been told it will take 3 weeks to arrive from the U.S. once we put in the order.

If we order more than 20, I'm sure we'd be able to get the price down.

Thanks.

Where would we get the Vision series developed?

If developing costs weren't too great, I'd like 1 X 200T, and 1 X 500T, for extensive camera tests.

The only problem is processing, as Cinevex/atlab won't process super 8 :(

i live and film in melbourne, concerning film stocks, you can get tri-x, plus-x, and k40 through VANBAR, around $21 per film.

and film plus of punt road do mail order processing and telecine, a very good job too.

i would be very keen on getting my hands on some 500t, i would order two, or four if push came to shove.

i know of a couple of people i might be able to bribe into buying some also.
my email is mishkin_prod@hotmail.com, if the "order" is a good thing, a person might need to be nominated to receive the money from individuals, send the cheque, and apon the arrival of the films, send them out to their respective owners.

if someone knows of a shop, or other trust worthy person, nominate.

i'm a getting itchy for 500t!

I had always intended on getting my negative processed somewhere in the US. I haven't found any places that do it in Australia unfortunately :(

It shouldn't be that big of a deal sending neg to the US to be processed - should it? Isn't it just the shipping cost that's a disadvantage???

I'll speak to my local Kodak rep about it, but maybe we can just put separate orders through him, and pay him separately - then when he's got everyone's order, he can put the big final order through to the US??? Then we don't have to worry about nominating someone to collect everyone's cash first. Hopefully he can do that. What do you reckon??

Thanks, everyone, for the helpful replies.

Scotness- how did you find Video 8's telecine to be?

Re: Vision2- I'd also like to know the options/pricing of processing prior to placing an order. I'd be open to sending it overseas if it is not too expensive (and the film is not at risk of undergoing anything harmful like x-ray inspection). Maybe we could obtain a group saving for this, too, although I imagine it would be hard to organise.

Are we sure that this processing can't be done locally, or somewhere closer such as N.Z.?

I think it's worth asking... maybe you could also ask if that "20 rolls minimum" could be a mix of 200T and 500T, rather than just being one type?

Have just e-mailed The Film Unit in New Zealand, asking if they're willing/able to process Super 8 color neg stock. :) Chances are that they won't be, given that they don't have anything like that listed on their site, but we can only ask.

Anybody else worth trying?
