We should be so lucky to get sued for using the name "Pan-8". It would mean it was financially successful enough that it made a difference to someone.

I like Pan8 or Pan-8 or PAN8 or whatever. And I agree, getting sued would only bring Super 8 some much needed publicity. Can't be all bad.

But a pan is "a revolving horizontal movement of the camera from left to right or vice-versa." Methinks we got fixated on Panavision and Panoramic, forgetting the obvious.

I'd suggest staying clear of Tilt-8, Zoom-8 (wait... Nikon got that one first...), Focus-8, and Dolly-8 too.

Moviestuff: Will a better name make it more reliable or so vastly more cost effective that the production community will suddenly start showing it more respect?
Roger: You are a smart man that I respect a lot. I look up to your advice (and I'm sure everyone will agree) more than you realize. I am new to super8 and never post much because you guys are the experts, i just listen. But What I was trying to get at with being in the name, is to attract people from the digital world(lets make it hip to shoot 'wide8' 16:9 and get more people to shoot before the prices of HDV flood the market with affordable cameras they will shoot on- lets pull them in on this transition phase to appreciate film. Wouldnt that be great, to try to convince some people onto our side, see the art that super8 can provide. WHy not make it in marketing a name that stands seriously for this reason alone? Yeah, professionals already dismiss the format for the most part, but, where does that put this format, but to die, if we can't create more interest in it for kodak to keep supporting it?

TO Mitch Perkins:
I chose "Super Duper 8" *because* it's silly! Unfortunately, having a sense of humour really ticks some peole off.
I don't really know you, but I'm guessing you helped create the name to take offense to it. but hey, who wouldn't want to go down in the history books, I don't blame you. I have a great sense of humour, as people who know me can tell you, but I was just saying i just don't like the name and that's my opinion.. because I take super8 seriously, and like others on this board, think we can really do better to market it. I promote it so much, and try to convert people, and have never really been for such a cause.. maybe it's because I for one, don't want to face the demise of a true art form. Hat's off to you for helping the cause, if you worked on 'Sleep Always'. It has helped put super8 back on the map. We should all remember about what we are all bickering about, its the super8- be happy that the person you are arguing with at least has that much in common to keep the format going. ;)[/b][/quote]

[snip good words]

"Unfortunately, having a sense of humour really ticks some peole off", is a terribly constructed sentence that got me in trouble. Reality: many people don't share my sense of humour.

Now, your sentence above I cannot decipher. The rest of your words, I agree with, but a personality trait of mine is, I dislike trying to convince people that A is better than B. I do not have the patience for it. I salute you and others who do.
However, I must tell you, if I had the cash, I would own an A-Minima, and shoot Super 16, that is, for larger projects that were slated for distribution.

I just saw the newsflash on the front page of filmshooting.com. Pro8mm has announced "MAX-8" as their name for the 16.9 format.

And it looks like the common wisdom about not being able to convert Beaulieu 4008s to wide format was rubbish, because they're offering a "wide gate" version of the "classic" remanufactured 4008.

Sigh.

I just posted because it looks like Pro8 has just "invented" wide screen Super 8. That disappoints me, and I wanted to start a grassroots widescreen S8 movement to provide format information and let people know that they can do it themselves cheaply - they don't have to spend $3000 on a refurbished Beaulieu 4008.

That thought Naus-ee-8s me.

BigAss-8?

Or did somebody suggest that already? No way in hell I'm looking back thru this thread to find out. I was thinking of filing my gate to shoot some BigAss-8 before this thread. Now I'm thinking of *narrowing* my gate for an aspect ratio of 1:1.

Square-8: It's not just for squares anymore.
